Government Office-Town Court

<p>Court sessions are held in the courtroom of the Municipal Building every tuesday for criminal matters, and the first, fourth and fifth thursday of the month for civil, traffic and town violations. Court is also in session one wednesday a month for small claims.</p> <p>Cases are heard by the presiding Justice. Jury trials occur more frequently now than in the past, because the Court handles a greater number of cases. Local residents are called upon to serve as jurors, and trials last from one to three days.</p> <p>The Court has jurisdiction on civil cases up to $3,000. Town Justices preside in Small Claims Court in cases having a value of up to $3,000. The Court hears criminal cases where the maximum sentence is up to one year in jail and the maximum fine is up to $1,000.</p> <p> </p>
