Organ Donor/Blood Drive Scores Big Numbers

People come out in large numbers to the bi-annual Red Cross blood drive, held along with an organ donor drive in memory of Joey Acocella Jr.

Dozens of volunteers rolled up their sleeves and made a fist Tuesday, donating much-needed blood that will help re-stock blood banks throughout the region.

The Red Cross Blood Drive, held twice a year in Harrison, has seen more and more participants recently, and this event held at the was no exception.

The event coincided with an organ donor drive, organized not only by the Harrison Chamber of Commerce, but by Jennifer Lucas, close friend of the late Joey Acocella, who was a strong supporter of the cause.

Acocella, Harrison's town clerk, died last month at the age of 30 after a long battle with kidney and heart problems.

“My goal today is to get 10 new organ donors,” said Lucas, who fondly remembers how Acocella spread awareness about organ donation while waiting for a new kidney of his own.

People came from all areas of the county Tuesday, one person from Tuxedo, NY, was in Harrison for business and decided to stop by and donate. Several students, senior citizens and even law enforcement personnel all sat side-by-side at one point, awaiting their turn to donate.

Harrison Chamber of Commerce President Ada Angarano has organized blood drives in the past and was happy to see what looked to be one of the largest turnouts ever.

“Two hours in and we already have about 25 donors with over a dozen scheduled for later in the afternoon,” said an excited Angarano, who was delighted that people are becoming more familiar with the blood drives as attendance continues to rise.

Snacks were provided to volunteers from local merchants, who have helped out with these drives numerous times in the past.

One of the donors was actually a volunteer at the blood drive. Rie Shibata, of Harrison, ate a light snack before her turn on the chair and reflected on how important donating blood is in her native Japan, as well as here in Harrison.

“People definitely want to help in Japan because of the constant possibility of natural disaster, but even here, it is nice to help and make a difference,” said Shibata.
