Labor Groups Step Up For Food Pantry

The Harrison Association of Teachers, local labor unions and the Harrison Town Board showed their support for the Harrison Food Pantry Thursday, donating thousands of dollars to those in need.

While Harrison continues to cope with the arrests of six town employees who police say from the local food pantry, local labor groups wasted no time stepping up for the Harrison families still in need.

Harrison Director of Community Services Nina Marraccini accepted $6,000 in donations at Thursday night's Harrison Town Board meeting. The Harrison Association of Teachers contributed $4,000, the Harrison PBA (police union), CSEA and CSEA Foreman, Professional Firefighters Association and Harrison Town Board contributed $500 each.

"I am proud of the efforts our members make each year to support this necessary cause and I applaud them for such," Angela Ader, Harrison Association of Teachers' liaison to the food bank, said in a statement.

The Harrison Association of Teachers frequently makes donations to the food pantry, and works with the community services office at the start of every school year to raise money for backpacks used to buy as many as in need every September.

"Harrison unions have come forward and they are being very generous to the people who need it in our community, thank you very much," said Harrison Mayor/Supervisor Joan Walsh.
