Harrison Football Players Take Part in 'Soup'er Fundraiser

About 30 Harrison Football players gathered more than 300 cans of food for the Harrison Food Pantry this weekend.

Harrison varsity and junior varsity football players collected almost 350 cans of food for local families in need at the Harrison A&P Saturday morning.

About 30 players signed up for shifts from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and asked shoppers to purchase a can of food for donation. The cans were donated to the Harrison Food Pantry, which provides meals to approximately 100 local families in need.

The "Souper" event took place a week before the hometown New York Giants are scheduled to play in the Super Bowl and was organized by the Friends of Harrison Football booster club and head football coach Art Troilo Jr.

"That's something (coach Troilo) wants them to do," said Janice Varmon, who helped organize the event. "It builds their character, but it's also good for team building and to show them that it's not only about yourselves, it's about the community and they are happy to do that."

The event is one of several fundraising events members of the local football team partake in every year.
