Community Cleanup Targets Veterans Park

Organizers of a community cleanup scheduled for later this month are seeking volunteers in the community.

Things aren't very pretty right now in the woods behind .

From plastic litter and dead trees to lawnmowers and even a rusted-out car, a significant amount of junk has accumulated in one of the only large wooded areas in Harrison's downtown.

To fix the problem, community organizers have set up a community cleanup day on Nov. 19 and 20. They are seeking the help of the community to make the weekend as constructive as possible.

"We really want to protect the land for future generations and take care of it," said Anja Porto, who is organizing cleanup effort.

Porto said a string of fires in the woods a few years ago has left a collection of dead trees along some of the park's trails. The fires changed the lighting in the woods and some weeds need to be taken out in order to restore the parks ecosystem.

There are also collections of junk and other garbage that create fire hazards.

The Harrison and Mamaroneck Fire Departments have agreed to donate their time to help out; some of the firefighters are also bringing four-wheelers and other machinery to help drag out larger objects from the park at the end of Crystal Street.

Porto said organizers are also asking for gardening tools, a wood-chipper, garbage bags and a dumpster from anyone who might be able to help. Of course, they are also looking for anyone willing to come out and help the day of the event.

The cleanup is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Food, drinks, cakes, hot chocolate and coffee will be served to volunteers throughout the day.

"I just thought it was something positive," Porto said. "We've had so much negative and negativity going on with this campaign that I think it would be good for the community to get together and do positive things."

Porto added that she hopes to schedule another cleanup and planting effort in the spring if she can get enough participation for this event.
