First Heat Wave No Sweat in Harrison

People found ways to cool off Wednesday afternoon as temperatures reached triple digits for the first time this summer.

As temperatures reached triple digits in Harrison Tuesday, there was no better place to be than the cool waters of the Ron Belmont Pool Complex in West Harrison.

That was clear a few minutes before the pool's noon opening, as about 30 people stood in line waiting for their chance to jump in. The excitement didn't languish throughout the day, as the pool, water slides and decks were busy all afternoon.

"Everyone can't wait to get in here because it's such a wonderful facility," said pool supervisor Dottie Klein. "So first warm day, they come running."

Harrison's pools are open this week from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., giving students who have a half day this week a place to visit. Regular hours will begin on Monday.

For West Harrison resident Tom Mullin, who brought his daughter to the pool Wednesday after kindergarten graduation at , the timing couldn't have been better.

"It's a beautiful day," he said, looking out at the packed pool. "It's a really great facility, it's one of the perks of living in Silver Lake."

Klein said the crowd was no surprise given the warm temperatures, but it was great to see everyone having a great time.

"It's about letting everyone having fun and keeping it safe," she said. "And how could you not have fun here?"

For those not interested in testing the waters, there were also options to keep cool at some of Harrison's store fronts. At on Halstead Avenue, store owner Lisa Giuliano said people have been stopping in for a refreshing snack to beat the heat.

"It's been a good day, busy," she said, noting that the warm weather brings people outside, which is good for business. "This is the place to go when it's hot."

Heat advisories will remain in effect again Thursday as temperatures are expected to again threaten triple digits. So Harrison's cool-down locations are likely in for another busy day.
