You Pick: Harrison Male Athlete of the Year

We narrow it to five, you choose the winner. Help us select this year's Harrison Patch athlete of the year.

As we close the book on another thrilling year of Harrison varsity sports, it's time to recognize some of the many great athletes that made this year special.

For the second time, Harrison Patch is asking readers to select our athlete of the year. Last year more than 300 people participated, selecting softball catcher Gigi LoDolce and baseball third baseman Mike Delacey as the

Below are our nominations for Harrison's male athletes of the year for 2011. Click here to enter your vote or vote on Facebook. Results will be counted from both and announced on June 28. Check back tomorrow morning to see the female athlete of the year nominees.

Our male athletes are:

Zaid Al-Doori 

An all-state selection for the winter and spring seasons and recipient of the track team’s coach's award in the spring, Al-Doori flourished into a track superstar in his senior year.

Al-Doori reached the state championships in both seasons, competing in three events in the spring. In the 400m dash Al-Doori’s time of 49.07 was good enough for . The senior also competed in two very successful relay runs, both of which finished in the top ten in the state.

Duke Alvora

Alvora served as a captain for three teams during his senior year. His energy and intensity was palpable throughout his Harrison High School career, even if he was injured or unable to play.

This fall Alvora was a captain and two-way starter for the football team that . In the winter he turned in another dominating season on the wrestling mat and in the spring Alvora was once again one of the leaders of the Harrison defense during lacrosse season. This year he was all-league in football and wrestling and all-section in football.

Brandon Bonistall

Bonistall battled injuries during most of his senior year, but still made a tremendous impact on two programs.

After missing most of the football team's regular season with injuries, Bonistall returned late in the season and helped lead the team to the state championship game. After a winter surgery, Bonistall returned in the spring as one of the lacrosse team’s go-to scorers. Though the team was ousted early in the playoffs, Bonistall reached a career milestone in his final home game when he .

Michael Chiarella

Chiarella’s dazzling ball-handling ability was a sight to see during every basketball game, as the point guard led Harrison into the playoffs in his senior season. Averaging nine points and seven assists per game as one of the team’s captains, Chiarella made the all-conference team after missing his entire junior year with an injury.

Chiarella was even more impressive on the baseball diamond this spring, as he hit nearly .400 with 21 runs scored and 18 RBI. He was one of the team’s captains and was an honorable mention selection for both the all-section and the Diamond Nine teams.

Steven Ricciardi 

Ricciardi was one of just five three-sport athletes in the class of 2011 and made the most of his time with every team. The senior was also a scholar-athlete during each season. In the fall Ricciardi was voted second team all-state as a running back as part of a . He also succeeded on defense and special teams.

Ricciardi was also the second leading scorer for the basketball team with nearly 10 points per game and he led the Husky defense in blocked shots. In the spring Ricciardi participated in track and field for the first time and was quickly viewed as one of the more talented athletes on the team, excelling in several events.
