Sportsweek: Softball and Baseball Playoffs, Track Athletes Prepare for States

A look at this week in Harrison varsity sports.

Varsity Baseball

Harrison’s season ended a game before the section championship as Tappan Zee defeated the Huskies 10-4 on Tuesday afternoon. Harrison led the game early but after the fourth inning the Dutchman took control and there was no looking back.

Harrison starting pitcher Brian Lobel had issues finding the strike zone as he walked five Dutchmen in his 3.1 innings, forcing Harrison to come from behind. Lobel gave up three earned runs on four hits and took the loss.

Offensively the Huskies collected six hits and Harrison was unable to get the big hit late in the game. Max Bruckner had two RBIs without collecting a hit and senior co-captain Michael Jacobson was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

The year ends at 15-7 for Harrison.

Varsity Softball

The Husky softball team suffered a familiar fate this week as their year ended with a loss to the Hendrick Hudson Sailors. For the second consecutive year the Sailors and Huskies met in the playoffs and Hen Hud prevailed.

Unlike last year’s bout that ended 1-0, this year’s contest had much more fireworks as the final score was 5-2. Harrison had the lead the majority of the game but the Sailor bats came alive just in time for victory.

The top of the order was offensively challenged as the team’s top three went 0-for-8 with a walk. Catcher Amanda Evangelista and first basemen Alijah Webb had the two RBI for Harrison while Evangelista and the team’s captain Jessica Magnotta had the only runs for the Huskies.

Harrison finishes the year with a mark of 16-4, they will ned to replace three seniors on their left side. Magnotta, the shortstop, along with third basemen Ali Neu and left fielder Diana Minishi graduate this year.

Varsity Track & Field

Harrison’s track and field squad had several members qualify for the New York State Championships in Rochester on June 10-11. The team competed at White Plains High School on Friday in the Section I championships.

Junior Nina Sarmiento was the only member of the girls team to qualify for the state championships, becoming the section champion in the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:02.64. This is the third consecutive year Sarmiento has qualified for the state championships in this event.

The boys team had several good showings at the section championships. Zaid Al-Doori won the 400m dash with a time of 49.50. Harrison’s 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams became the first relay teams from Harrison to ever to qualify for the state meet. Both teams finished second at the section championship as the 4x100 finished with a time of 42.37 and the 4x400 team finished with a time of 3:20.91.
