Sportsweek: LAX Season Ends, Baseball and Softball Teams Slip Down The Stretch

A look back at the week of varsity sports at Harrison High School.

Varsity Baseball

The Huskies had a tough final week of the regular season, going 1-3 in the team’s final four games. On Monday Harrison traveled to Fox Lane and lost a high-scoring affair to the Foxes 13-12. Michael Chiarella scored three times on four hits, while Michael Jacobson had two hits and three RBIs.

Harrison’s lone victory came at Port Chester on Thursday, as the Huskies held the Rams to just two hits and no runs on the strength of a Brian Lobel complete game. Offensively Harrison got production from the top of the order as sophomore Austin Pollack had two hits and scored two runs.

The Huskies played two games on Saturday, losing both. Harrison lost 7-3 in a rematch with the Rams in the morning, as the Husky bullpen struggled in the late innings. Chiarella, Pollack and Vinnie Nicita Jr. scored the three runs for Harrison.

On Saturday night Harrison took on Rye for the league title under the lights of West Harrison Park. Harrison was defeated at the hands of their rivals 6-3 as Pollock, Peter Viscogliosi and Nick Lovinger scored for the Huskies and Michael Jacobson had three hits.

Harrison will now take a short break before starting playoff action on Thursday.

Varsity Softball

For the first time in recent memory the Harrison softball team lost back-to-back games this week.

Fox Lane got the better of the Huskies on Monday, defeating Harrison 5-4. The game took place in terrible weather, but the Huskies still outhit the Foxes 10-7, four of which went for extra bases. Alijah Webb was 2-for-3 with a double and home run, while junior Alyx Scapperotti scored a run and Jessica Magnotta added two hits.

Rain hurt the Huskies this week as weather caused Harrison to postpone Wednesday’s game against Port Chester until next week and practice inside for the entire week.

The Huskies next saw the field on Saturday, when they traveled to Horace Greeley and lost 6-0. Hits were scarce for Harrison as they only collected five. Horace Greeley jumped out to an early lead and Harrison was unable to come back.

Harrison has two more regular season games scheduled. They will face Clarkstown South on Monday and Port Chester on Tuesday before starting the playoffs.

Varsity Boys Lacrosse

Harrison’s boys lacrosse team ended their season with three consecutive road losses, including a blowout loss to Rye in the first round of the playoffs.

The week started with a 9-6 loss to North Rockland on Monday. The Huskies fell behind early and never led. Brandon Bonistall, Alex Acompora and Jake Marino each scored two goals in a losing effort.

The Huskies then faced Rye in the first round of the playoffs. Harrison played the Garnets even for the majority of the first quarter, but Rye took over and dominated the rest of the way, winning 16-4. Marino scored a goal, as did Robert Waldman, while Drew Pritchard added two of his own.

The Huskies will say goodbye to several talented seniors. But with another appearance in the playoffs, Coach Bruce Kinisky appears to have the program headed in the right direction.

Varsity Track & Field

Both the girls and boys track and field teams participated in the Westchester County Championships this week. The boys team was almost able to pull out a victory, coming in second to the eventual champion New Rochelle by just a few points.

Zaid Al-Doori won the 400 meter dash for the boys and was the only competitor in the event to finish with a time under 50 seconds. The Harrison 4x400m relay team also came home with a first place finish.

The girls team also had a good tournament, finishing 10th out of 28 teams. Harrison junior Nina Sarmiento continued to impress in the hurdles, winning the 400m with a time of 63.81.

Varsity Boys Tennis

Harrison hosted the section championships this week and several local athletes competed in the tournament. Coach Sam Fishman and the Huskies had three teams competing for the doubles crown, while Michael Chen was the school’s lone representative in the individual tournament.

Chen and the doubles team of Charlie Hayden and Grant Wissak were both ousted in the first round, while the team of Brandon Ellis and Andy Smithline along with the squad of Bennett Wissak and Kosta Teverovskiy made it to the second round before falling.
