Sportsweek: Huskies Stun Rye on the Pitch

A look back at this week in Harrison sports.

Girls Soccer

In a thrilling upset, Harrison defeated the defending section and regional champion Rye Garnets 2 – 0 in their only game this week.

Goaltender Jackie Fonseca led the way for the Huskies, as the Harrison defense was impenetrable. Izzy Sheck and Kate Faxson scored the goals and the Huskies celebrated their victory by dowsing Head Coach Jon-Erik Zappala with water after the game.

Before this week the Huskies were in a bit of a slump, but they will be looking to build momentum as they take on Briarcliff, Fox Lane and Horace Greeley this week.

Cross-Country

The Harrison cross-country team competed in the Brewster Bear Invitational on Saturday and both the boys and girls teams did very well. Lead by speedsters Trey Wasilesky and Chris D’Antona, the boys finished sixth out of 12 teams. The girls team won the Varsity 3 race, with Sara Purinton, Alex Sanchez and Catherine Rocchi all finishing in the top twenty.

The team also had a dual meet at Ossining scheduled for Tuesday, but it was cancelled. Next on the schedule is a trip to the Manhattan Invitational on Sunday.

Field Hockey

The Huskies are building some mid-season momentum after tying Byram Hills on Monday and beating Somers Tuesday. Michelle Deleo scored the lone goal in Harrison's 1-1 tie against Byram Hills. Nicole Barletta and Michelle Loguidice scored for Harrison and Ali Menniti pitched a shutout in goal with eight saves against Somers.

The girls will look to stay hot at Fox Lane this week.

Football

The Huskies fell to 2-2 on the gridiron this week as night in overtime. The loss was the team’s first ever at McGillicuddy Stadium. Vinnie Nicita Jr. tossed an early touchdown to Will Hilliard and Hilliard added two more scores on the ground, but the Harrison secondary struggled against the Indians’ pass-happy offense.

Harrison has a short week to prepare for their next game, as they will travel to 4-1 Ossining on Thursday night in Patch’s .

Boys Soccer

The boys soccer team continues to struggle offensively as this week the team fell to Port Chester 3-0 and Bryam Hills 6-0. The Husky offense has had issues all season, as injuries and a lack of chemistry continue to hurt the team.

Harrison will have home games against Fox Lane and Horace Greeley this week to try and get back on track.

Girls Swimming

The Harrison girls swim team extended its winning streak to four games Monday with a win over Pelham. Even with some of the team’s top athletes sick or injured, Harrison has been able to compete with some of the best teams in the area.

In Patch’s game of the week on Tuesday, the , despite wins from Olivia Caparelli and Sarah Hodes. In the meet Harrison managed to keep things close against one of the best teams they will face all year.

Harrison will look to get back track this week against cross-town rival Keio.

Girls Tennis

The Husky tennis team lost early in the week to Pelham and had their Tuesday match against Rye cancelled because of rain. Harrison will have opportunities this week to find their first victory, as the team will face Blind Brook and Byram Hills at home and Rye Neck on the road.

Girls Volleyball

Harrison continues to roll indoors as the volleyball team defeated Valhalla and Byram Hills this week. The Huskies finished off Valhalla with ease on Monday, 25-20, 25-13 and 25-14, and survived a scare from the Bobcats on Tuesday, winning 25-20, 26-24 and 25-18.

With just one loss Harrison is still one of the best teams in Section I and will next travel to Horace Greeley and Westlake before meeting up with John Jay on Thursday.
