Sportsweek: Baseball and Softball Teams Win Playoff Openers

This week's Harrison varsity sports roundup.

Varsity Baseball:

Much like last year, Harrison hit the ground running in the post season in 2011, winning two first round games to setup a matchup with Tappan Zee on Tuesday in the section semifinals. 

On Thursday Harrison knocked off Roosevelt in a first round game. The Indians got out to an early lead against the Huskies, but Harrison scored four runs in the fifth inning and five in the sixth to .

Peter Viscogliosi went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI, co-captain Michael Chiarella added two doubles and four RBI. Sophomore Austin Pollack scored three runs for the Huskies. On the mound Brian Lobel overcame a bumpy first few innings to throw a complete game for the win.

On Friday Harrison would need another comeback if they were to get past the John F. Kennedy Gaels.

Down 3-1 going in the sixth inning Harrison was able to tie the game and eventually jump ahead for a 6-3 victory. Nick Lovinger provided the offense for Harrison going 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs, while co-captain Michael Jacobson also found timely hitting going 1-for-4 with an RBI double. Max Bruckner took the hill for the Huskies and only gave up six hits while striking out seven in a complete game victory. 

Harrison will get a shot to return to the section championship as they face Tappan Zee at home on Tuesday afternoon.

Varsity Softball

The Huskies swept two regular season games against Port Chester and Clarkstown South early in the week before starting playoff action. 

Harrison defeated Port Chester 10-0 on Tuesday, collecting 15 hits, three from Jenna Webb who finished the game 3-for-3 with a triple and a home run, two RBIs and three runs scored. Allyson Brabant went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.

The Huskies honored their three seniors on Wednesday as the team took on Clarkstown south. Harrison had a three-run first inning and that was enough for starting pitcher Samantha Angilletta, who scattered 11 hits over seven innings for the victory. Offensively Harrison had five doubles and senior Allesandra Neu was 1-for-3 with two RBI.

As the playoffs began the Husky bats got hot as they beat Saunders Trades & Tech High School 17-2 in five innings. Angilletta collected her third victory of the week striking out two and giving up only six hits. Offensively Harrison was clicking as Alijah Webb went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs, Jenna Webb added a 4-for-5 outing with two RBIs and a double, while team captain Jessica Magnotta was 2-for-5 with two RBI.

Harrison’s next game is Tuesday afternoon against Hendrick Hudson High School, the Sailors eliminated the Huskies from contention last season.

Varsity Track & Field

Both Harrison’s boys and girls track and field teams traveled to Pearl River High School for the Class B Championships this week. The girls had a solid showing coming in fifth place of the 18 teams competing, while the boys team won the event.

Harrison junior Nina Sarmiento led the way for the Huskies, finishing first in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.4. Harrison also had a very good showing in the triple jump as Sarmiento came in second place with a mark of 33.10.50 and freshman Rula Samad came in third with a mark of 33.09.50.

Gary Castelli won the long jump for Harrison with a mark of 20-11.50 but teammates Tom Park and Steven Ricciardi were not far behind as they came in second and third giving Harrison 24 points in the event.

Ricciardi also made his mark on the triple jump, as he won that event for the Huskies with a mark of 42-06.50. Zaid Al-Doori won both the 100 and 200 meter dash with times of 10.9 and 21.9. Senior Rob Merritt came in first place in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.6. The Harrison team of Ben Konigsberg, Castelli, Merritt and Al-Doori came in first place in the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 42.9.
