Harrison’s Webb Takes Home Con Edison Award

Con Edison gives out a scholastic sports award to a student athlete every week during the school year.

In just her junior year Jenna Webb has achieved elite status as a student, athlete and most importantly as a young adult.

Con Edison honors a young athlete from Putnam or Westchester county with their athlete of the week award during the school year, and recently selected Webb.

Athletes chosen excel in academics, athletics and community service. Webb is the only junior to win the award so far this year.

“It means a lot to win this award as a junior because it is very rare that a junior gets it, I try my best in school, sports, and to do work in the community,” Webb said. “I put a lot of hard work and effort into what I do and I am very honored to have received this award.”

Webb is a three-sport athlete at Harrison, playing volleyball in the fall, basketball in the winter and softball in the spring. This year she was part of the first ever female team to win the section championship from Harrison on the volleyball team. She helped the basketball team with interior toughness and a good outside shot and was the softball team's starting centerfielder, hitting .595 in the regular season, with 35 RBI and 14 extra base hits.

“It means the most to win this award during the spring season because this is the sport I work the hardest for,” said the centerfielder.

Webb is also no stranger to community service, another factor considered in the award. She has donated time and effort to little league, and participated in walks for breast cancer as well as other various deserving causes.

Although Webb admits she isn’t a naturally gifted student, hard work in the classroom has helped her earn a grade point average that is well above average.

“When I was younger I had a learning disability,” said Webb. “I overcame it and to know all the time I spent struggling, trying to improve my grades and be the student and athlete I am today really makes me appreciate this award even more. It goes to show if you continue to work hard you can really be successful.”

The classroom isn’t the only place Webb puts in extra hours. Despite being one of the most naturally talented softball players in the section, she participates in extra practices and workouts year round.

“She's a strong person on and off the field,” said softball captain Jessica Magnotta, “she deserves it, she's a great role model for everyone on the team to look up to.”

“Jenna is definitely someone that the younger girls on our team can look up to,” said softball second basemen Allyson Brabant. “She had an outstanding year both at bat and in the field. It's great to see her hard work paying off in an honor like this.”

Jenna Webb said she had no idea she was even being considered for the Con Edison award, but it looks like the powers that be got it right this time. Best of luck and continued success to Jenna Webb, for this great honor.
