Duke Alvora Dominates The Mat

Harrison High School's junior wrestler Duke Alvora continues his strong season with yet another quick and impressive win.

Last Tuesday night at Iona Preparatory High School the Harrison Huskies dominated the Gales in convincing fashion winning the majority of the matches. However the most dominating force for the Huskies was team captain Duke Alvora.

Alvora is the rare breed of high school athlete in that he is both strong and quick. He can rely on his speed and endurance to out last an opponent or he can just completely overpower someone using his pure power and knowledge of the game.

On Tuesday Alvora used every facet of his game to eliminate his opponent in just 65.3 seconds, focusing primarily on his bull rushing speed and strength.

"I just went into the match thinking that I wanted to get this over with quick." Alvora said of his victory.

Alvora knew that this was a match he should win, and win easily as he was the much better athlete and the more seasoned wrestler.

"I never really doubted the match," Alvora stated of the match, "he went to headlock me and I went along for the ride. I rolled him over, and I didn't panic and was able to get the pin."

Alvora is the Huskies biggest wrestler at 5'11" and 215 lbs. Fueled by his competitive nature he has often wrestled and beat opponents in higher weight classes.

Coach Vincent Nicita knows that Alvora's leadership and versatility are two things that the program can build on in the future.

Alvora improved his record for the season to 33-8 and as the season comes to an end he will look to continue his good play on the mat.

Best of luck to Duke Alvora, Harrison's athlete of the week for January 31st to February 6th.
