Strong Starting Pitching Leads Boulders Past Bears

The Rockland Boulders beat the Newark Bears, 4-1, Tuesday night in Newark.

The Boulders were led by a strong pitching performance from starter Pat Moran, who pitched eight innings, giving up one run on three hits while striking out 11. The 11 strikeouts were one less than Moran’s season high, which also came against Newark.

Rockland jumped out to an early lead when Chris Valencia hit his third home run of the year to give the Boulders a one-run advantage. Cole Kraft followed the homer with a single and scored on a single by Ryan Scoma with some help from an error by Newark, giving Rockland a 2-0 lead before Newark even came to bat.

Ryan Mollica grounded out in the third to score Scoma, giving the Boulders their third run. Mollica drove in Rockland’s fourth run of the game with a solo homer in the eighth.

The Boulders and Bears have split the first two games of their four-game set this week.
