Harrison Basketball '12 Preview

Your interactive, daily digest for all Harrison scores, schedules and standings — and a place for you to add information and images for all of your favorite sports and teams.

Harrison basketball finished 9-11 last season and won a game in the opening round of the playoffs for the first time in years. With six seniors lost to graduation and Harrison’s six leading scorers no longer on the team, Coach Gary Chiarella and the Huskies have their work cut out for them in a very competitive league.

Recently Patch caught up with the coach to discuss this year’s team.

Patch: As far as age and, more importantly experience goes, what type of team do you expect to have this season?

Chiarella: We are a very inexperienced group with not much size, but have the quickness that is needed to defend on the perimeter.

Patch: What were some of the weaknesses your team had last year that you hope to improve upon this season?

Chiarella: Some of the weaknesses that we can improve on is team chemistry, rebounding.

Patch: Who are some of your returning players coming back who you see being big contributors?

Chiarella: Brian Lauro, Michael Goldman, Brandon Ellis, Luke Wolf, Nick Pipitone and Coby Lefkowitz are the returning players. With Lauro and Lefkowitz being major contributors last year.

Patch: Who are some of your new players you are expecting to thrust into a larger role on the team?

Chiarella: Cory Calcagni, Jack McCarthy, Sebastian Pellejero, Brian Goldstein, Vinny Nicitia (currently out with a knee injury), Zac Evans (8th Grade), Timmy Broderick.

Patch: How has the team been preparing in the off-season?

Chiarella: In the off season we played in a summer and fall league at Hooperstown in Mt. Vernon and we had open gyms from mid-September to the beginning of the season.

Patch: What are your goals for the season as a team?

Chiarella: Our goals are to win a league title and make the sectional playoffs. In the playoffs we would like to advance farther then last year. (The team lost in first round to Eastchester last season).

Patch: Are there one or two games circled on the schedule this season?

Chiarella: Not one particular game sticks out on our schedule that is more important than the other. Some of the places to play that are more fun because of the crowd involvement are Greeley, Byram Hills, Port Chester, Rye. These games always bring the biggest and most vocal fans. I love playing at Port Chester not only because they are good every year, but their court is small and the crowd is intense and right on top of you.
