HHS Alum Looks to Go Pro

Recent graduate and my former recreation basketball teammate Ryan Ekey has traded in his high tops for cleats as the graduate is turning his attention to professional golf.

Ekey, who was the first Purchase golfer to ever win an individual tournament while attending the school, entered in his first pro event in Lake Worth Fl., last week, according to the Purchase Athletic Department website.

Most of the local sports world is still enjoying a holiday hiatus, but while most teams rest up for a long winter schedule, the Westchester County Center hosted five games as the annual Slam Dunk challenge tipped off its first day Monday.

In boys basketball Croton-Harmon beat up on Yonkers 53-24, Albertus Magnus edged White Plains 59-53 and Byram Hills survived Poughkeepsie 66-56.

On the girls side, Pearl River defeated Brewster 63-39 behind a 19-point effort from senior Allison Cook to give Head Coach Lorraine Moylan her . Arlington also advanced, beating Kennedy 55-42.

The action will resume Tuesday at 12 p.m. as five more games are scheduled to wrap up this portion of the tournament. Check out the complete bracket for scheduling and results and remember that tickets are $5 per-day and it is $5 to park.

Pearl River will be hosting the at Rockland Community College’s Eugene Levy Fieldhouse starting Tuesday. The meet will begin with freshman and sophomore teams at 8:30 a.m. Varsity teams are set to take center stage at noon. Several teams from Rockland, Westchester and New Jersey are expected to attend.
