The Harrison tennis season is off to a fantastic start as the Huskies are undefeated in their first four matches including a 6-1 defeat of the cross-town rival Keio Unicorns. Harrison has a solid senior class so this has the makings of a special season for Coach Sam Fishman and the Huskies.

Harrison finished last season in the middle of one of the most difficult leagues in the state and sent the doubles tandem of Brandon Ellis and Andy Smithline to sectionals.

Before the season began Patch Sports met up with Coach Fishman at practice to discuss this year’s team, the veteran coach often broke from the interview to shout instructions to his players, but he allowed us to sit and soak up some Harrison sports knowledge.

Patch Sports: As far as age and, more importantly experience goes, what type of team do you expect to have this season?

Coach Sam Fishman: This is an experienced team, our top five players are all good players. Three of them are seniors. We don’t have a super player, but we have some pretty good players.

Patch Sports: What were some of the weaknesses your team had last year that you hope to improve upon this season?

Coach Fishman: We want to build on doubles. We want to win on second, third and fourth doubles. We cannot win in our league unless we can match the depth of our teams. We are improving there, how much have we improved? I’ll let you know in a couple of weeks.

Patch Sports: Who are some of your returning players coming back who you see being big contributors?

Coach Fishman: Captain Andy Smithline, Captian Brandon Ellis, and Captian Michael Chen are all good singles or doubles players. Juniors Kosta Teverosky and Matt Miles are going to be good players, Miles is already competing.

Patch Sports: Who are some of your new players you are expecting to thrust into a larger role on the team?

Coach Fishman: Most of the guys are returning players. We are keeping 16 kids on varsity and another 14 on JV so we are really happy with the turnout we have this year.

Patch Sports: How has the team been preparing in the off-season?

Coach Fishman: The boys play other sports, some of the guys play a lot of tennis on their own. About half of the team is involved in lessons which is pretty good.

Patch Sports: What are your goals for the season as a team?

Coach Fishman: We want to improve our league record and see if we can get to the next level in our league and our conference. Our league is our conference in that the good teams in our league are the good teams in our conference. One of our big goals is to improve in our doubles play, especially in our second, third and fourth doubles.

Patch Sports: Are there one or two games circled on the schedule this season?

Coach Fishman: There are two levels. Horace Greely and Byram Hills will be tough for us to win, but I would love to have a great match against them and I want to win the matches that we can win. I want to beat Blind Brook, I think we have a shot against Keio this year, and I think we have a shot against Fox Lane and Rye this year. That doesn’t mean that I think we will win each match but I would like to see us be competitive.

Patch Sports: What are you personally looking forward to this season?

Coach Fishman: I’ve been coaching at Harrison since 1967 and I have been coaching tennis here for about half of those years. I want to enjoy it, I want the team to enjoy it and I want the kids to enjoy it as individuals.
