Daily Sports Digest: Harrison's Forgione Throws Complete Game Shut Out at Mount Vernon

Michael Forgione pitched six innings and struck out six as the senior picked up his first win of the season and Harrison beat Mount Vernon, 9-0.

Jake Zuckman led the offense as the junior went 2-4 with three runs. Alex Beckett and Austin Pollack each scored twice for Harrison.

Brandon Claye, Malik Fogg, and Nazam Gafoor each picked up a hit for Mount Vernon in the loss.

College Sports Notebook:

Chargers looks to bounce back

The Dominican College women’s lacrosse team hopes to bounce back on Saturday after suffering a heartbreaking triple overtime sudden-death loss to the visiting Tigers of Holy Family University, 16-15.

Dominican, which fell to 3-7 overall and 3-4 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play, will welcome Chestnut Hill College of Philadelphia to Orangeburg on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

The Chargers forged a late tie against Holy Family as sophomore KC Jentzen of Pearl River scored unassisted, and freshman attack Allison Smithwick of Commack converted a pass from senior Aubree Williams of Great Meadows, NJ, with 16 seconds remaining.           

In the first overtime, Dominican scored both goals as Traci-Joan Muniz of Middlesex, NJ, scored unassisted and freshman Gina Sparaco of Freeport converted a pass from Williams.

Williams and Jentzen each scored four goals while goalie Veronica Iozzi of Chester, NJ, made 16 saves in 68:40 of action.

Manhattanville Comes From Behind to beat Baruch

Down 10-8 heading into in seventh inning the Valiants knew they strike quickly at home against Baruch. Manhattanville put up four runs in the bottom of the seventh and never looked back as the team won 12-11.

Christ Nardozzi of Poughkeepsie led the Valiants as the first basemen went 2-4 with three RBI and a run. Dan Fiorito of Yonkers and Kevin Brady from the Bronx each had two hits and two RBI in the game. Fiorito, Hans Arias (Bronx) and Elias Tsouristakis (New Rochelle) each scored two runs for Manhattanville.

Port Chester’s John Bucci played centerfield and had a triple and an RBI.

Don Fisher picked up the win in relief and improves to 1-1 on the year.

Mercy splits on diamond

Junior right fielder Andrew Bock of Malverne had a clutch game-winning single as the Mercy College men’s baseball team earned a 7-6 victory over the University of Bridgeport in an East Coast Conference doubleheader in Dobbs Ferry.

Bridgeport took the nightcap, 9-3, but senior Billy Dring of Mahopac pitched two innings in relief, allowing just one hit.

Mercy took an early lead when junior centerfielder Nick Papas of Castleton reached first on a bunt, and sophomore shortstop Jeremy Lovera of Carmel later drove in a run with a bases-loaded fielder’s choice groundout.

Coach Bob Greiner’s Mavericks host Felician College at 3 p.m. today, and then open a three-game series at Dowling College on Saturday with a doubleheader at noon. The teams meet again on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Mortarboard musings

• The seventh-ranked Concordia College men’s tennis team hopes to continue its outstanding play when it travels to Florence, SC, for its final three regular-season contests. The Clippers (13-6, 6-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference) meet Lander University today, Wingate University on Friday and Francis Marion College on Saturday.
• Purchase College softball player Alyse LaPadula of New Rochelle was named the Skyline Conference’s Player of the Week. LaPadula led the Panthers to four victories last week as she went 12-15 with 11 RBI and eight runs.
• Monroe-Woodbury alum Colby Lewis of the Rockland Community College golf team is ranked second in the player standings in the Mid-Hudson Conference. The Hawks are also second in the team standings, behind Dutchess CC.
• The awards keep rolling in for Monroe College as two players were named All-Americans. Aivah Parham was named to the All-American first team as teammate Jasmine McRoy was named to the second team.
• Harrison’s Ashley Marino pitched a no-hitter against MCLA for Springfield College Tuesday night. Marino also pitched yesterday in 1-0 loss against Williams College.
