Mike DeLacy Leads Harrison Baseball

This week's athlete of the week is Harrison's power hitting third basemen Mike DeLacy.

Harrison's varsity baseball team spent their spring break at Disney's Wide World of Sports complex in Florida. The team was busy while in the Sunshine State, competing in several scrimmages and even two regular season contests.

But one player stood out from the rest of the team offensively, especially when it mattered most, and that was third baseman Mike DeLacy. In the two games that counted for the Huskies, DeLacy went 6-for-6 in eight plate appearances and played a solid third base for the team.

DeLacy's teammates are quickly realizing how important he is to Harrison's success.

"We really count on Mike a lot," said Harrison first baseman Brendan O'Shea. "He is our leader on and off the field; his work ethic is second to none."

In the team's first game against John Jay, DeLacy hit safely in both of his plate appearances including an RBI double. In his other two trips to the plate he walked and was hit by a pitch. The team lost the game 6-3, but DeLacy did his part for the squad.

Harrison finished their trip on March 30 when, led again by DeLacy who went 4-for-4 at the plate, the team squeaked out a 7-6 victory over John Jay. DeLacy finished that game with 3 RBI, 2 runs and a triple.

The win over John Jay ended the trip on a positive note for the Huskies. It also marked the end to a long week of baseball.

"Our schedule was pretty tough, we had several doubleheaders," said DeLacy. "Our team stuck through it together and pulled out some wins during the scrimmages. But, most importantly, we won one game against John Jay"

Last season DeLacy was a team leader in most statistical categories, finishing his junior year with a batting average of .400, 22 hits and 16 RBI. He was also very difficult to strike out, only going down on strikes six times all season.

This year DeLacy's teammates will be looking for him just as much on the mound as at the plate. He is expected to see a little bit more time on the hill this year, and coaches are hoping that he can help the team win games with his arm and his bat.

But, most importantly, DeLacy is still looking to improve even after a great week in Florida.

"As an individual I need work on being a little more patient as a hitter," said DeLacy. "But as a team we need work on how to finish off a game and not just play the first few innings."

Last year DeLacy was undoubtedly one of the better players on the field, as a senior he will need to become a quality team leader both on and off the field if Harrison hopes to compete for a division title.

Best of luck and continued success Mike DeLacy, Harrison's athlete of the week for the week of March 29 - April 3.
