Ashley Marino Re-Writes Record Book

This week's athlete of the week is Harrison's Ashley Marino for an outstanding high school career that spanned five seasons.

Last Wednesday Harrison lost at home to Hendrick Hudson High School in the Section 1 playoffs, ending Harrison's season prematurely and finishing the careers of several Husky seniors.

No one player took the loss harder then pitcher Ashley Marino. Marino was the losing pitcher in the game, but after a rough first inning she was virtually un-hittable.

"The low point of the year was the unexpected loss in the playoffs," said Marino. "We were all devastated and upset, mostly me because I am a senior and it was a sad moment."

Even though the surprise loss may stick in several players' minds for a while, Ashley Marino's season, and more importantly her career, were nothing short of spectacular.

Marino broke several records in her senior year, she is now Harrison's all-time leader in career wins, career strikeouts, season strikeouts and she is tied with her cousin Taryn Marino for most wins in a season.

"Breaking all the records is an honor because I work and practice so hard so I can get my team as far as we can go," said Marino. "They all mean a lot to me."

This year alone Marino was 15 - 2 with a microscopic o.44 earned run average. In her 111 innings pitched, she stuck out a record 171 batters and only allowed 23 walks. She finished the year with eight shutouts, three no hitters and two saves.

"It is not easy to say my best game," said Marino. "But in the Tappan Zee game I had this fire in me to beat them so I really pulled myself together to make it happen."

In the game against Tappan Zee Marino limited the Dutchmen to one hit and Harrison won the game 1-0.

Even though she is known for her arm, Marino also proved to be a valuable member of the Harrison offense in the 2010 season. Marino had six RBI and a pair of doubles while accumulating a batting average of .330.

But her statistics only tell part of the story. Marino was the team's captain and turned out to be a fantastic role model to the younger members of the team.

"Ashley is one of the best people I know. Whether we are on the softball field or off of it, she shows leadership and has a true character," Harrison centerfielder Jenna Webb said. "She is one of the best players I will ever get the chance to play with and I appreciate all she has done throughout her career."

Ashley was also on the school's volleyball team and will be attending Springfield College in the fall where she hopes to make the school's softball team.

Best of luck and continued success Ashley Marino, Harrison Patch's athlete of the week for the week of May 30 to June 5.
