Tenner Shows Pride, Picks Springfield

Harrison's Nicole Tenner spent her senior season as a key member for Harrison's basketball and soccer teams, now she is set to become a part of the Springfield College soccer squad.

Nicole Tenner spent her final year at Harrison as one of the most unselfish and dependable athletes the school could have asked for.

During basketball season she was one of the team’s three captains and when several other members of the back-court were injured, it was up to Tenner to step up and lead the Huskies.

Though Tenner was one of the best players on the school’s basketball team, it was her effort on the soccer field that attracted college coaches. Last fall, the Harrison coaching staff asked Tenner to switch to defense to help the team. Without hesitation, the senior agreed and gave up on individual statistics to play defense. At the end of the season her work on the field was rewarded with an all-league selection.

Now that Tenner’s Harrison career is over, she is looking to move on as a member of the Springfield College soccer team.

“I heard about Springfield from friends that have gone there recently,” Tenner said. “I was not recruited heavily from schools for soccer, I just decided that I wanted to play soccer and I was set on going to Springfield so I walked on to the team.”

Tenner had the option to pursue an athletic career in either sport, and though she was more sought-after for basketball, she decided to play soccer at Springfield.

“It was hard to decide what sport I wanted to play,” Tenner said. “Because I do have a love for both and as much as I would love to play both sports it would not work out well in my schedule.”

Since she is walking on, her role with the squad has yet to be decided. Tenner figures her role will be to just stay ready until she is needed. She is planning on returning to the offensive side of the ball and playing forward.

“My role immediately will be to be there in case someone gets injured, or they just need an extra player,” Tenner said. “I hope to become one of the major players by my sophomore year.”

Tenner’s team has been practicing since mid-August, so by the time classes start in September she will be well-acquainted with her new team. Although she is ready to start he season with her new team, the 2011 Harrison graduate is very thankful for what Harrison athletics has done to prepare her for the next challenge.

“Harrison athletics have prepared me because at Harrison I was kept well involved in sports my entire life,” she said. “They taught me to be a good athlete with great sportsmanship and they made me the athlete I am today.”

Springfield College is a Division III program. The team's first game is scheduled for Sept. 3.
