School Board Rundown: Proposed Tax Increase Dips to 3.3 Percent

The Harrison Board of Education revealed that the proposed tax increase will decrease a fraction of a percent, among other things, during Wednesday's meeting.

HARRISON - The Harrison Board of Education held its regularly scheduled meeting Wednesday night, here are some highlights in case you missed it.

Budget

As required by state law, the board once again presented its 2010 - 2011 proposed budget. There were very few changes from what was proposed earlier in the month with the exception of a slight drop in the tax increase. The proposed total dipped from 3.47 to 3.33.

Assistant Superintendent for Business Bob Salierno said that the change was a result of property assessments coming in from homes bordering other municipalities, adding that these types of small changes are normal.

Voting for the school budget and school board candidates will take place on May 18.

State Testing

With advanced placement exams taking place this week and regents exams fast approaching, Harrison Superintendent Louis Wool reminded parents that schedules will be slightly different in the high school during the next few weeks. He also reminded parents to make sure that students are getting plenty of sleep during test weeks. He added that he liked the confidence he saw from students while visiting the high school during the week.

Upcoming Events

The board reminded members of the community that there is a full page of student events planned for the last two months of the school year. The events, ranging from plays to fundraisers, will be listed on the school district web site and the board encouraged people to attend.

New Club

The board passed the creation of a new Portuguese Club at the Harrison High School.

Safety Warning

With the warm weather, more children are out on sidewalks near schools during the afternoon. Wool reminded everyone to watch out for reckless drivers near school grounds and encouraged people to call police if they see anyone acting dangerously.

"These are everybody's kids," said Wool. "Keep your eyes open."

Next Meeting

The next meeting of the board of education will be on Wednesday, May 19., the day after the school budget vote.
