Online Vote Could Earn $500,000 For a Harrison School

Kohls is offering a $500,000 donation to the school that received the most votes on it's Facebook page.

You can't say that Mayor Joan Walsh doesn't look for every opportunity to supplement the town's budget. She e-mailed a creative means for supplementing the school budget on Thursday—Facebook voting.

Kohl's Cares—the charitable foundation for Kohls—is celebrating its 10th anniversary. To recognize the event the Kohls retailing chain is donating $500,000 to 20 schools, based simply on the number of votes the schools receive on the Kohls Facebook page.

To enter, participants must go to facebook, put 'Kohls' in the search engine and at the Kohls Cares site vote for the Harrison school of your choice.

Each school with the top number of votes will then be required to outline the ideas they would like to fund and complete paperwork related to the donation in order to receive it.

Seven million votes have already been cast and today is the last day for voting.

There are roughly 27,000 residents in Harrison. So what if every Harrison citizen got friends and family members to vote?

What if each school in Harrison made it a project today to see how many votes each student can get? It would make for a great school civics lesson in a fun format, and may actually help.

The total budget for the Harrison Central School District is more than $100 million, so a $500,000 donation wouldn't exactly eliminate all financial issues with the school. But a little extra certainly wouldn't hurt while administrators pinch pennies every year in an effort to save.

Harrison High School currently has only 39 votes, approximately 119,559 behind the national leader, according to the page. But why not try for a one day town-wide effort for serendipitous funds? It certainly can't hurt.
