Moschetta Picks Pride

Former Harrison soccer and basketball captain Andrea Moschetta is heading to Springfield College this year where she will play basketball.

Patch's 2011 Andrea Moschetta heading to Springfield College this fall, where she will be a freshman on the team's basketball team.

The two-sport athlete captained both Harrison's soccer and basketball teams this year. She was also a scholar athlete and an all-league soccer selection.

Her athleticism and on-court talent drew interest from schools including Mount St. Vincent’s, SUNY Plattsburgh and Emmanuel. All of those schools wanted her to play basketball, but choosing which sport to play in college wasn't a given for the former Husky standout.

“At first I was torn on whether to play soccer or basketball, but I realized basketball was my true passion,” Moschetta said. “Through the years I have put so much time and effort into the sport. I know I will miss playing soccer though.”

The school’s head basketball coach, Naomi Graves, was instrumental in scouting Moschetta, as well as the team’s assistant coach Staci Andrews. Coach Andrews made the majority contact with the point guard.

“I chose Springfield because I fell in love with the campus and the friendly atmosphere there,” Moschetta said. “Also, they have a well-known occupational therapy program and are known to have strong athletics. After meeting and talking to coach Graves and coach Andrews as well as the players, I realized I could see myself playing for Springfield.”

Moschetta will be fighting for minutes off of the bench this year, as she will be playing behind and learning from a strong senior point guard. Already, Moschetta is hoping to learn from the experience and be better for it in the future.

“I was promised a spot on the team,” Moschetta explained. “I will not be seeing much playing time as a freshman, but if I work hard then I will receive the playing time I deserve.”

The hard work and effort that Moschetta learned at Harrison was an asset that drew interest from several programs, she said.

“Harrison Athletics have prepared me to play in college because I learned how to be a leader on the floor,” said Moschetta. “That is one thing coach Andrews really liked about me.”

This winter Harrison will have to replace their on-court leader from a year ago, which teammates say won't be an easy task.

“Andi is a great team player and she has a really good attitude regardless of what sport she plays,” said soccer and basketball teammate Alexandra Misisco. “I have no doubt she will be successful in college sports.”

“She is a hardworking and dedicated player,” said basketball teammate Alyx Scapperotti. “Andi is a great team leader and she knows how to motivate a team and will them to victory."
