Local Church to Sponsor 'Back 2 School' Giveaway

The Memorial Community Church and Hudson Valley Family Church will sponsor an evening of free food, music and school supplies in West Harrison on August 31.

What's better than new supplies for kids as they return to school in the fall?

For parents, the answer is free school supplies.

Two local churches are helping to bring just that to West Harrison later this month, sponsoring an event to bring free school supplies as well as food and entertainment to the community.

The and Hudson Valley Family Church will hold a "Back 2 School Backpack Giveaway" event on East Gainsborg Ave. from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on August 31. While supplies last, students can collect free school supplies while families enjoy free music and BBQ.

"It's (going to be) a fun day that the whole family from Harrison can come and enjoy," said Ramaul Morgan, Pastor at Memorial Community Church.

The supplies have been donated from members of each church as well as surrounding churches. This is the first back to school event the two churches, which share a building on East Gainsborg Ave., have hosted.

"I have kids going back to school and I know every year is a challenge with the school list being longer and longer," said Morgan. "I thought 'what better way to help the community than to give back to the kids going back to school'."

East Gainsborg Ave. will be closed from Hancock to Madison Street for the event. Kids games and other activities will also be available.

"It's almost going to be a big barbeque," siad Morgan.
