HHS Model Congress Takes Home Awards From Princeton Competition

The HHS Model Congress Team won Outstanding Delegation at the Princeton Model Congress Competition this weekend in Washington D.C.

This was the first Outstanding Delegation in the club’s history and Harrison was the only public school to receive the distinction at the conference.

The students competed in mock sessions of Congress both in individual committees and in “full sessions”, where seven team members won coveted “Gavel” awards for outstanding individual performances and another eight students earned Honorable Mention distinctions.

Harrison High School’s Model Congress team is comprised of more than 40 members from all four grades. As a warm-up to the prestigious national competition in Washington D.C, the model congress team also competed in the one-day Horace Mann Model Congress Competition, where they were the only public school in attendance. Congresswoman Nita Lowey was the conference’s guest speaker and made several references to the Harrison High School and community and the exceptional HHS students who have interned in her office.

At Horace Mann, the HHS Model Congress Team won two “Gavels.”  Representative Jacob Seidman won for best in the ethics committee where he presented an ethics bill entitled: An Act to Implement Medical Amnesty. Representative Jacob Temkin won best in full session, the best speaker at the conference, where he argued for his bill entitled An Act to Improve American Innovation and Competition.

Ninth Grader Mareille Sheck’s Energy and Natural Resources bill—Energy Efficent, Motion Detection Lights in Corporate Office Buildings, was included in the full session bill packet.
