Jazz Night Caps a Banner Year For Harrison Musicians

Harrison High School's jazz band, swing band and jazz singers perform at Ernesto Ristorante in White Plains. All proceeds were donated to The Leukemia Society.

In a candle-lit dining room in White Plains, a select group of Harrison High School jazz performers experienced what it's like to live the life of professional performers, playing in a restaurant setting while patrons enjoyed fine food and drinks.

The group of about 50 friends, parents and jazz enthusiasts would have a hard time separating the student performers from professionals, as the musicians showcased their talents for about two hours Monday evening at Ernesto Ristorante on West Post Road.

"We wanted them to have the experience of what it's like to play a gig," said Mary Ellis, Harrison High School Music Department Director. "They get to have the experience of what it's like to play in front of an audience in a restaurant setting like any good jazz musician would do—this is where your work would be so this is where their work is."

A 19-member jazz band, 26-member jazz choir and 15-member swing band each took to the small stage setup in front of the room. Seniors performed solos in a performance that has become a tradition students look forward to throughout the year.

"It's a chance for them to really have a good time, showcase their talents," said Nancy Vernali, treasurer of the band parent association, which helps setup the event every year. "These are specialized groups, these are the kids who are really dedicated to what they do."

Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Leukemia Society, in support of a Harrison alum recently diagnosed with the disease. Parents and students decide on a different charitable cause every year to send any money raised by the event.

Ernesto's has hosted Harrison's jazz night since the early '90s, opening on a Monday just for the performance.

Several of the jazz musicians are also a part of the Harrison Marching Band, which has traveled the country this year and been honored with several awards. Others have participated in the drama or choir performances at the high school.

"It's a wonderful culmination of all the hard work they've done," said Vernali.
