Final Goodbyes From College Bound Graduates

College bound graduates from the Harrison class of 2010 are leaving town for colleges and universities across the country

The hugs, smiles and tears of leaving home for the first time are a moment everyone remembers. For college bound 2010 Harrison graduates, this is the time of year for that moment.

In the previous weeks these young adults were making all the last minute purchases they needed to get college started. Places like Bed Bath and Beyond, The Home Depot and The Container Store were staples in every outgoing freshmen's normal routine.

As the calendar flips to September, students have already attended orientation and are moving into their new dorms—living on their own for the first time.

"I am really excited to be in the swing of the college experience, but I am nervous too because it's the first time I am on my own," said Harrison graduate Sasha Tharani, who will run track for the University of Rochester. "In terms of athletics, I can't wait to see what higher competition brings and how it will challenge me."

Harrison's Brett Levy said he knew that he wanted to go to Syracuse University for as long as he can remember and is thrilled to be there.

"I am ecstatic to begin this chapter of my life right now," said Levy. "I am looking forward to the challenge and the experience that comes with college."

While Levy went north to pursue his academic dreams, others are going west to enjoy a heavy helping of surf and sun along with academics. Jared Hodes is going to UCLA and said he is happy to be in the Golden State.

"I am not nervous, just excited," said Hodes. "I am just exited to get out in California where it is always nice weather and of course to continue my education."

Diane Frawley knows this time of year well as both a teacher at Harrison High School and a mother of two college students.

"Watching the students graduate year-after-year is so rewarding because I know that they are heading toward the wonderful adventure that the college experience is," Frawley said. "Even though it is my job to launch them into the future as both a parent and a teacher, I never really want them to leave the nest. I treasure the ones who stay in touch and share their accomplishments with me."
