Massive Art Exhibit, "Coney Night Maze," at the Neuberger Museum

Inspired by the landmark roller coaster on Coney Island, "The Cyclone," with its hairpin turns and stomach lifting plummets, a new sculptural installation at Neuberger Museum of Art at SUNY Purchase, "Coney Night Maze," opened on June 7th and will remain until Sept. 15th.

The exhibition was 13 years in the making by  artist Donna Dennis, also a sculpture professor in the School of the Arts' Art+Design program.

A description on the SUNY Purchase website characterizes the exhibit as a "monumental sculptural installation" that rises to a height of twelve feet and "includes an ascending rollercoaster-like track which weaves in and out of the darkness, then descends into the distance, skimming the edge of a rock wall that runs the work's entire 27-foot length."

The website goes on to describe the setting as a darkened space lit by rows of bare bulbs, "with its dead ends, locked gates, and abandoned ticket booths, it evokes a phantasmal nocturnal composition of compressed architecture in which the sound of a rollercoaster is heard faintly in the distance."

Currently the Neuberger's hours are Tuesday - Sunday, 12 to 5 pm. Admission is free for members, children under 12, Purchase College students, faculty and staff.
