Acompora Picks Pioneers

Harrison's Alex Acompora spent his senior season as a member of two Husky teams that went to the playoffs, now he is looking forward to joining the C.W. Post Pioneers.

After a career as a two-sport star at Harrison, Alex Acompora is poised to join the lacrosse team at C.W. Post this fall.

During his senior year at Harrison, Acompora was part of a tremendous backfield that carried the Husky football team to the state championship game. During the spring Acompora was part of a versatile attack that led the lacrosse team into the section playoffs, he led the team in goals scored and finished the season second in assists.

The versatile Acompora says he enjoyed playing football more at Harrison because of the dedication shared with his teammates. But it was Acompora’s abilities during lacrosse season that got the attention of several college coaching staffs. Acompora was recruited by more than a dozen college lacrosse teams ranging from power programs to local schools.

The Pioneers have a rich lacrosse tradition, winning national championships in 1996, 2009 and 2010. Acompora says he is excited to compete on the national level.

“I was interested in playing at the Division II level because it is the best balance of sports and academics for me,” said Acompora. “When I started the recruiting process as a sophomore, the C.W. Post lacrosse team won the Division II national championship that year, and they won it again in 2010.”

Acompora is receiving a partial scholarship for his talents on the lacrosse field and, assuming his role increases with the team every year, he is hoping that scholarship will grow too. Pioneer Head Coach John Jez told Acompora that he will play the midfield position because of his speed and natural ability to clear the ball.

The decision to play at C.W. Post was made early in Acompora's senior year, but Acompora had been on Jez’s radar since well before September.

“Coach Jez had seen me play at one of the camps, and I sent him my highlight video. He contacted me and we met last September, I went on an official visit and I immediately felt that C.W. Post was the right choice for me,” Acompora said. “They have a championship lacrosse team, a great campus and a great business program.”

Like all high school students Acompora said he is preparing for a level of play very different from what he saw in high school.

“I am going to try my hardest to stay focused on my schoolwork while dedicating a huge amount of time to lacrosse,” Acompora said. “It is going to be a challenge to try and find the right balance.”

C.W. Post starts their school year after Labor Day and Acompora and the rest of the Pioneers will begin practice two weeks later.
