A Look Back: The Year in Sports

A look back at the varsity sports season at Harrison High School during the 2009 - 2010 school year.

Now that the 2010 class has walked for graduation, it is time to look back at the year in sports.

Fall Sports:

Football:

Like everything else in Harrison, this article must start with Football. The Huskies got off to a great start behind the much-improved play of their offensive and defensive lines. Toward the end of the season Harrison, Eastchester, Roosevelt and Rye all had one loss, and only two teams would make the playoffs. The last weekend of the season pitted Roosevelt against Eastchester and Harrison against the hated Rye Garnets for a win and get in scenario. But Harrison lost to their bitter rival, and failed to make the playoffs.

Boys Soccer:

The Harrison boys soccer team battled through an up-and-down season. Led by all-section athlete Bryan Merlos, the Huskies didn't have a great record at the end of the year, but were able to advance to the playoffs. There they won a home game against Spring Valley before falling to Sleepy Hollow.

Girls Soccer:

The girl's soccer team had a year of growth. With a young roster, several underclassmen were trusted with starting roles and the youth and inexperience was too much for the team to overcome. The team will, however, have plenty of experience returning for their 2010 campaign.

Cheerleading:

The Harrison cheerleaders had a great year, taking home a trophy in eight of ten competitions before finishing third in their final competition of the year. The cheerleaders also competed at Hofstra University and taught a very successful clinic.

Field Hockey:

The Harrison field hockey team was led by their all-elite goalie Samantha Stump as well as other seniors. Though the team didn't have the record they would have liked, the Huskies still had a successful season that ended in the playoffs.

Winter:

Boys Basketball:

The basketball team got off to a great start behind the senior leadership of co-captains Dennis Rinaldi and Jared Hodes. The Huskies started out 9 - 2 before reaching the more difficult part of their schedule. In the middle of the year the team suffered through nagging injuries and inconsistency that hurt the team's moral. Harrison ended their season with six consecutive losses, including a season-ender in the first round of the playoffs.

Wrestling:

The Huskies showed their strength this year on the mats. Duke Alvora and Zach Guarnero were two of the strongest members of the team, beating nearly all of their opponents. Andrew Planamento, one of the team's smallest individuals, was one of the team's best as he was named to the all-section team and won the team's coach's award.

Spring:

Baseball:

The baseball team had a Cinderella year. After going .500 for the first few months of the season, the team lost a heartbreaking game to Rye, which may have turned their season around. After falling to the bitter rival, Harrison won their next eight games, including a rematch with the Garnets, landing them at Dutchess Stadium to play for the section championship. Harrison's third baseman and cleanup hitter Mike DeLacy, was named the MVP of the league.

but the late-season run brought the Huskies to the championship for the first time since Coach Marco Diruocco took over the team.

Boys Tennis:

The boy's tennis season started out rocky when one of the team's co-captains was lost for the year with an injury, leaving Brady Klein as the lone senior on the team. The team went through some growing pains, but at the end of the year the duo of Andy Smithline and Brandon Ellis competed on the very last day of the league tournament. The doubles pair lost their final match, but being underclassmen, it is a good bet we will see them again next year.

Softball:

Statistically, no team in Harrison had a better year then the 20-2 softball team. The team had a near perfect regular season and two of the Harrison pitchers, Ashley Marino and Breanne Arlotta rewrote the record books. Arlotta set a new mark for saves in a career, while Marino broke the records for strikeouts and wins for both a career and season.

The team was upset Hendrick Hudson in the second round of the playoffs.

Boys Lacrosse:

The boys lacrosse season was a year of heartbreak and growth. Harrison suffered its biggest loss of the year in preseason when Duke Alvora went down with a torn ACL. But the team was able to rally together to scrounge up enough victories to make it to the playoffs, where they lost 11 - 10 to one of the best teams in the section.

Girls Lacrosse:

The Harrison girls lacrosse team had one of their best seasons in school history. Led by a stellar senior class, Harrison went into the playoffs and, for the first time ever, hosted a playoff game. Melissa Shulman reached career goal number 200, extending a Harrison record.

Track and Field:

Senior Emily Singer dominated the majority of her events, breaking a number of records for Harrison. Junior Zaid Al Doori competed in the triple jump with a score of 44'2 and sophomore Nina Sarmiento set the poll vaulting record at 8'6'' as well as finising 1:03.27 in the 400m hurdles.
