Purchase College Students Reach Out to the Community Through Project Focus

Project Focus is a collaborative program in which Purchase College-SUNY students mentor elementary schoolchildren in underserved communities. This semester, the college students provided homework help, tutoring and mentoring at three locations:  Port Chester-Rye Brook Library, Don Bosco Center in Port Chester, and Westhab in Mount Vernon. At the Port Chester-Rye Brook Public Library, nearly 50 schoolchildren participated in the program .

The Project Focus Partnership Program’s objective is to establish a mentoring connection between youth and specially trained college students through civic/leadership skills and academic support. The program is a collaboration with the New York Campus Compact and the AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) Program.
