Water Alert Continues in Harrison

The Westchester Joint Water Works, which supplies water to Harrison, West Harrison and Purchase, is asking residents to conserve as much water as possible this week.

The record-high temperatures and dry weather conditions have caused a sudden increase in water usage, especially in West Harrison and Purchase, according to a press release by the Westchester Joint Water Works (WJWW).

As a result, the town and the WJWW are asking Harrison residents to voluntarily comply with a reduction of non-essential water use. This includes the following for residential water customers:

  • Water lawns and gardens every other day on an odd-even basis corresponding to your house number.
  • Refrain from car washing.
  • Limit laundry and dishwasher use to mid-day and non-peak hours: between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and midnight to 4 a.m.
  • Limit water use to essential household activities.

The water-use reduction, at this point, is requested on a volunteer basis, but that could change if this approach doesn't work.

"Should this voluntary approach prove to be ineffective, we will have no choice but to impose the above regulations, as well as others, on a mandatory basis," the press release said.

Although reservoir levels are not low at this point, Harrison Mayor/Supervisor Joan Walsh said that because water must be pumped uphill to many areas of town, the increase in water use could result in short term water pressure shortages. This could affect fire protection and other essential services.

A separate set of voluntary reductions were outlined for commercial buildings:

  • Discontinue all use of irrigation systems until further notice.
  • Limit water use to essential services.
  • Inform the Water Works immediately if you suspect a water main leak on your property.
  • Whenever it becomes necessary to locate a leak on your property, please assist the Water Works personnel by making sure now - before any problems, that valves are easily accessible and not obstructed.
