Update from Mayor/Supervisor Walsh

An update of the events of the town from Harrison Mayor/Supervisor Joan Walsh

The following is an update on some future and past events around town from Harrison Mayor/Supervisor Joan Walsh.

Thank You, Peter Navarro

After the March storm, when several large pine trees in Riis Park, across from the Municipal Building, were blown down. Town workers examined the remaining pine trees and determined that they too were in danger of falling. So they were cut down, and it was found that the centers had all rotted. The Park certainly looked barren.

Enter Landscaper Peter Navarro. Navarro also thought the area was too barren, and generously donated five trees: one cherry, three maples and one sacoba.  They were all planted on Wednesday, June 9, by the Navarro crew of Mike Vargas, Celestino CuAutle and Laureano Aquilar.  Thank you, gentlemen, and a special thanks to Peter Navarro.

CVS

Everything is set to go with CVS.  All inspections have been made, most permits have been issued, and we are just waiting for them to ask for the Certificate of Occupancy (the "C O"). As far as the town is concerned, they could open tomorrow.

They have gone back to the Zoning Board of Appeals as they want to have additional signage, and have been denied by the Building Inspector. However, that does not prevent them from opening and doing "whatever" after the Zoning Board decides with the signage question.

We hear the possible date of July 24 as their grand opening.

Gas Station - Mini Mart on Halstead Avenue

We all look at this structure, and see it also as ready to open.  However, the owner ignored a few rules, and is back before the Planning Board. One of his walls is too high, and the screening for the neighbors whose rear yards in the rear of his building has not met the Planning Board directive.

Lexus, across from Parsons School

The dealer has brought in new Lexus cars, and displaying them in the side parking lot. Again, the grand opening date is still uncertain, but there is progress.

Reminder

Brown bags of yard waste are collected on Thursdays or Fridays, depending on the day of your second sanitation pick-up.  Brush – tied in 3-foot bundles -- is picked up on Wednesdays. The town does not take tree trunks.

Bulky items, such as furniture and metals, are picked up on Wednesday.  It would be appreciated if you would phone (670-3200) to alert us to the need for a pick-up. However, if your furniture is still useable, why not call one of the volunteer agencies, such as Big Brother-Big Sisters, Goodwill or the Salvation Army, and donate it.  It would save us money – we pay $25 per ton for what we bring to the Transfer Station for disposal -- and you would get a tax deduction.  A win-win situation.
