Engel Briefed by Army Corps on River Flooding & Mitigation Projects

Homeowners in the areas that abut Sheldrake and Mamaroneck Rivers have a long history of coping with inconvenience and expense caused by flooding.

Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY-16) was part of a group who toured flood-prone areas of Mamaroneck on Friday with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (ACE). According to a release from Engel's office, the Congressman was updated on projects to alleviate flooding from Mamaroneck and Sheldrake Rivers.

Mamaroneck Mayor Norman Rosenbaum and Village Manager Richard Slingerland showed Rep. Engel and ACE members the areas most affected by flooding, including some homes that have been flooded more than once.

We have to be prepared for the likelihood of more storm damage – and despite superhuman efforts by some, and the bravery of many, we are still ill-prepared for another Sandy," Engel was quoted as saying in the statement. "The more involved the Army Corps is - the safer the people will be from future storms," added Rep. Engel, who is advocating at the federal level for mitigation projects.

In addition to the impact of recurring flooding on homeowners, riverbank erosion and habitat loss are additional consequences, and, according to the release, the degraded environment has an adverse effect on the general well-being of the watershed.
