Chris Hill admits many social issues, especially gay marriage, are much too complicated to sum up in a quick soundbite or a few sentences.
Abortion, while a complex subject, is an issue in which he's willing to take a firm stand.
Hill said he doesn't have a problem with abortion in terms of saving a woman's life. After speaking with medical professionals, he believes those situations can be identified and subject to exception.
As a general rule, however, the Bedford native says he cannot support abortion as a free choice.
"Abortion-on-demand in this country is simply moving away from life and the potential of life," he said. "It was easy 20-, 30- 40-, 50-years ago to say simply, 'life begins at birth,' because years and years ago there was probably a good chance a child born prematurely may not make it, but with technology and the advancements we've had the past couple decades, more and more we can determine the viability of life at conception, so my position on this is quite simple. Life begins at conception, and we make a mistake every time we let politicians in this country to once again divide us along the argument lines of whether or not an abortion is a procedure and should be allowed."
Once those parameters are set, he says we can talk about being pro-choice in terms of the decisions made up to conception.
"I don't think anyone should go through our school system and arrive at graduation without a background on the basic health conditions of men and women and exactly what's going on in their reproductive systems," said Hill. "Along with that, we need to talk about birth control and the availability of that, but when it comes to life, life begins at conception and under the Constitution of the United States, life is protected."
