Update: Fireman Out of Hospital After Monday Blaze

A fireman was taken to the hospital after a ceiling collapsed on top of him during a blaze in a two-story home at 39 Crystal Street.

A firefighter was taken to the White Plains Hospital after a collapsing ceiling landed on top of him Monday afternoon during a house fire at 39 Crystal Street.

The firefighter was released from the hospital Monday afternoon after suffering minor injuries. He is now resting at home, according to Harrison Fire Chief Dino Del Signore.

Authorities received a call of a fire at 11:20 a.m. and battled the blaze for about 35 minutes before they were able to knock it down. The three occupants of the home were inside when the fire started, but escaped by the time authorities arrived at the scene, according to Del Signore.

"They smelled something burning and the next thing you know they said the bedroom was on fire," said Del Signore, adding that fire was contained to two rooms in the back of the home and was an electrical fire, likely caused by too many extension cords and surge protectors plugged into the same outlet.

"The way the extension cords were ran across the room, under the bed and under the carpet, the extension cords over-heated and sparked the fire," said Del Signore.

The injury took place when the ceiling of one of the second-floor rooms fell onto a firefighter. He was dragged out of the home and taken to White Plains Hospital where he recovered.

Several other firefighters were treated for heat-exhaustion at the scene, but no one else was hospitalized. Temperatures on Monday reached the 90 degree mark, and firefighters from Rye, Valhalla, Village of Mamaroneck, Port Chester and Harrison rotated in to fight the blaze. The Purchase and West Harrison Fire Departments were on call as well.

"It made it difficult," Del Signore said of the heat. "I called several mutual aid companies to help out so we could rotate guys and rehab them - instead of beating up the guys."

Authorities did not leave the scene until 2:30 Monday afternoon.

Del Signore said that the building is currently uninhabitable and will require significant repairs.
