Thursday's Crash On I-287 In Purchase Still Under Investigation

Police still investigating Thursday's crash and manhunt that involved numerous police agencies.

A driver blowing past a fire chief going as fast as 140 miles per hour caused a serious crash involving four vehicles on westbound I-287 in Purchase just after 3 p.m. Thursday.

The speeding driver fled the scene andwhich lead to a manhunt involving State Police, Westchester County police and Harrison police.

As of Friday morning, the Harrison Police Department was still investigating the incident.

Purchase Fire Chief Joseph Brefere saw the accident occur while driving back from Connecticut.

"I saw the Port Chester police and then this guy just blew by me going at least 130, or 140 miles per hour," Brefere said. "It was like I was standing still."

Brefere identified the vehicle as a gold Dodge Charger with New Jersey license plates.

Shirtly after, Brefere said he saw a cloud of smoke up ahead, and he pulled over to assist the Port Chester police.

"They started smashing windows and told me to get down because they thought he might be armed," Brefere said.

The driver had already fled the car. Brefere said he ran across three lanes of trafic into the Kenilworth area of Westchester Avenue.

State and county police had helicopters in the sky looking for him.

Three other vehicles were involved in the crash, and two victims were taken to White Plains Hospital.

The Rye Police Department and Greenwich Police Department were also on the scene.
