Police: Man Used False ID During Traffic Stop

Harrison Police say a 26-year-old Brentwood man presented a false identification during a traffic stop on Westchester Avenue.

A 46-year-old Brentwood man faces a misdemeanor false personation charge after police say he used a fake name to try to avoid getting a ticket.

Police say Luis Alvelo was driving on Westchester Avenue while using a cell phone on April 5 at about 9:30 a.m. After conducting a traffic stop police say Alvelo claimed his name was Luis Lopez and presented a Puerto Rican identification card with that name on it. When police checked the allegedly fake name in their computer system "Luis Lopez" had a suspended license.

Alvelo was originally arrested for aggravated unlicensed operation under the name "Luis Lopez", but when police were taking inventory of his personal property they noticed a New York State ID card in the suspect's wallet with the name Luis Alvelo.

When police ran what they believe to be the correct name through their system they found a total of 119 suspensions or revocations on Alvelo's record. He was booked for false personation at that time and given a court date of April 12.

Teen Steals Eye Drops From CVS, Police Say

An 18-year-old Harrison student has been charged with shoplifting after police say he was caught stealing eye drops from on Halstead Avenue.

A CVS store manager told police she caught Zachary Mandell of Sunnyridge Road stealing an $8 box of eye drops from the store at about 3:45 p.m. on April 7. Mandell gave the box back to the store manager before police arrived and waited with the manager.

According to police Mandell admitted he tried to steal the eye drops and was arrested at the scene. 

Mt. Vernon Man Caught With Marijuana, Police Say

A 36-year-old Mt Vernon man was caught with marijuana in his car while driving on Westchester Avenue on April 9, police say.

Police stopped the 36-year-old at about 3:50 p.m. after they say he failed to obey a yield sign. While speaking with the driver police reported a strong smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Police searched the man's vehicle and found a single bag of marijuana between the center console and driver's seat.

The man was ticketed for unlawful possession of marijuana and aggravated unlicensed operation. He was released at the scene and given a court date of May 5.
