Police Continue Search For Missing Connecticut Man

One week after disappearance, police urge public to continue to keep watchful eye out for missing man and white Jeep.

The search for a missing Newtown, CT., man continued for its second week with no updates on his possible whereabouts, police said.

Detectives continued their investigation Monday, including interviewing family members.

Newtown Police Sgt. Darlene Froehlich said investigators are doing everything they can to find William Fitzgibbons, 56, of Fox Run Lane South, who disappeared March 21 after running an errand at the Big Y supermarket.

He was last seen using a service phone to call his wife to tell her he would be running late due to possible vehicle problems, police said. He had left behind his cell phone to charge, his wife, Jayne Fitzgibbons told police.

“It was making a funny noise,” she had told Newtown Patch of the vehicle.

The 1993 white Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo sport utility vehicle with a gray bumper and Connecticut license plate 709EFK remains missing, police said. There are no bumper stickers and the vehicle has no distinguishing marks.

The description of the SUV and its license plate has been sent out nationally to other police agencies in case it is spotted, Froehlich said.

Finding the vehicle will be important to finding William Fitzgibbons. Froehlich asked the public to continue to keep an eye out for the SUV and Fitzgibbons.

Froehlich said officials would not conduct a foot search unless they received additional information on where to look, such as if they were to find the SUV.

Fitzgibbons is white, bald, has blue eyes, wears glasses, stands 6-feet, 1-inch and weighs about 185-pounds. He was last seen wearing jeans, a mock turtleneck shirt and green sweater vest, police said.

Newtown, CT. is located about 50 miles northeast of Harrison. Police are urging anyone who sees a man matching Fitzgibbons' description to call authorities.

Fitzgibbons' family could not be reached for comment Monday.
