Man Robbed at Gunpoint Near Harrison Train Station

Police say a man armed with a handgun took a cell phone, briefcase, cash from a Harrison resident just after midnight Tuesday morning.

A Harrison resident was robbed at gunpoint while leaving the Harrison Train Station just after midnight Tuesday, police say.

Police say the man was approached from behind by an armed black male wearing dark clothes and a ski mask on Harrison Avenue near the Park Avenue intersection. The robber showed a dark colored handgun and took a cell phone, briefcase and cash, police say.

The victim was not injured and was able to call police after the incident.

Police are working with surrounding jurisdictions to see if this robbery has any connection with a string of similar incidents in Harrison, New Rochelle, Mammaroneck and Pelham, said Harrison Police Chief Anthony Marraccini.

"We haven't been able to establish a firm connection at this time, but we are working on the case as we speak," said Marraccini.

Wouldn't it make sense to have unmarked cars patrolling? We've seen armed police on the station platforms.

And so the Joan Walsh legacy goes on. Thanks to her war on the police dept. during her four years in office, Harrison has fewer cops and more crime.

need to stop this!
Harrison @ Halstead April 10, 2012 at 07:16 pm
Damn right Dan! It needs to stop! But it should have never begun!!!! This is the legacy of Joan Walsh. Cut, slash, and penny pinch. She just never understood that quality of life BROUGHT MONEY IN! A safe community brings homes sales up. I hope we can recover from her time in office. Now we can't walk safely down our streets anymore. You would expect this in Mamaroneck and Pelham. BUT NEVER in Harrison. In 4 years we went from exclusive to the Bronx. She ruined our community, tore apart our soul. She ripped the heart out of the things that made us special. We need more cops. END OF SUBJECT!

I don't know the expense of adding lights by the train station, but, better lighting and better police surveillance is necessary. If you go to the train station in White Plains in the evening, the entire corner is lit up and there is almost always a police patrol there. Unfortunately, this is the world we live in today.
Money is tight, unemployment is off the charts and people are desperate. We'll never know the reason for these muggings: thank God this person was not hurt. Hopefully, there will be a manageable way to prevent this from happening again. Please post any viable suggestions.

Police have now offered a $10,000 reward for information directly leading to the arrest of whoever is responsible for these robberies.
Frank April 10, 2012 at 10:25 pm
For you to be blaming the past administration is absolutely ridiculous. This particular criminal has been doing this up and down the Sound Shore communities for months. Enough!!! Stop this nonsense making everything in Harrison about politics. Your typical political response is what is bring this town down. Enough!
TTH April 10, 2012 at 10:43 pm
Frank, I could care less that this has been happening all along the sound shore, all I care about is that it's now happening in Harrison and often. Thanks to Mayor Walsh and her four year war on the police dept we now have less cops patroling the streets than we did in 1977. Do you have any idea how many cops are on the road between the hours of 4:00 pm to 8:00 am, I do and it's scary
Frank April 10, 2012 at 11:24 pm
There are police officers around the station at that time. They have been stationed there. To blame Joan Walsh for this doesn't make any sense. There was a majority of republicans on the Town Board that could have changed the budget items for the police department. I watch all the meetings, and the budgets were passed. My point is now that it's April already, can we please stop the blame game, and work on improving Harrison . As an independent, I am sick and tired of both sides playing this political game.

I am curious of what tax rate would you be willing to pay each year for an endless amount of resources? Just wondering,.

Don't say the budget can't afford it. What is a life worth?
Ross Revira April 11, 2012 at 12:41 am
Stop with the political blame game. The only way to catch this guy is a coordinated effort with all the police agencies involved. Throwing money at it and blaming Joan Walsh sounds like President Obama's re-election campaign by blaming his failures on President Bush.
Harrison @ Halstead April 11, 2012 at 12:52 am
Frank, just keep putting your head in the sand defending someone who did NOTHING but ruin our P.D. because of personal and political vendettas. The rest of us want action! MONEY IS NOT AN ISSUE IF YOU’RE DEAD! What if the guy had a few hundred in his wallet? How much do you think he is willing to pay? The fact is our community has changed with a direct correlation to her tenure as Mayor. You can't avoid the facts. We are less secure since she was Mayor. I don't care what happened in other Towns. This stuff didn't happen here. The entire character of our community changed during her tenure. And it wasn't for the better. People care about quality of life more than they do about $100.00 increase in taxes. Doubt me? Well if you do, where are Joan and Pat now? HIRE MORE POLICE NOW! Mr. Mayor, the P.D. was authorized two more officers. Where are they? They could be walking nights in grey's waiting for training as a deterent. Let's hire these officers now. They can be useful before the academy. Two sets of eyes with a portable radio is better than nothing. And the $ is there. What's the chief waiting for?

Joan Walsh is the reason why some crazy nut is robbing people in Pelham, New Rochelle, Larchmont, Mamaroneck and Harrison. Wow, you are giving her a lot of credit. I guess I missed the story where she was running all of these municipalities. BTW I believe that these incidents began in Pelham.. Perhaps the mayor of Pelham is to blame (only kidding-trying to make a point). Naomi
Naomi April 11, 2012 at 03:46 am
Let me make sure I get this right. First the former mayor is being blamed. Now our Police Chief. Give me a break! Our Police Chief does an awesome job-runs a tight ship and delivers results. The entire Department does a great job., especially in view of limited resources. Please remember that this encompasses 5 or 6 jurisdictions. It is going to take time for the Police to do their job.
Perhaps people be more cognizant of their personal safety. Instead of walking home alone at midnight-either take a Taxi-don't know if they run that late, pay for a one day permit at the train station (it is 3 or 4 for the day) or have someone pick you up. Or to people who take the train and drive - you see the same people on the train every day walking to and from -you stand next to them on the platform day in and day out - you know these people - you may not know them personally but you know their face and that they are your neighbor and vice versa, why not be a neighbor and offer the person walking a ride home. I am not a fan of Joan Walsh but to blame her for these robberies is absurd. She did cut the police department budget but a new budget for 2012 was adopted to include two new officers. I think the Harrison Police Department does an exemplary job. This is one of these crimes that are difficult to resolve but I have every faith in our Police Department to get the job done.

It's illegal to send an officer out on the street before he or she finishes the academy. They made the new hires, but until they are trained there isn't much anyone can do to speed up that process.
Jane Brandes April 12, 2012 at 02:22 pm
These robberies are a Sound Shore problem. Is it not possible to have more police coverage and video surveillance at and near the train stations? Can other police units be hired to supplement local forces?
grassroots April 13, 2012 at 03:45 pm
These type of crimes always increase during a downturn in the economy.Lets keep the politics out of it.Harrison@Halstead -FBI stats. show that harrison with its population, area and other demographics has 5 more officers available for patrol than is recomended already. When someone in Harrison calls for assistence they get 2 and sometimes 3 officers within minutes.Would this happen if they were as overburdened as some suggest?

NAOMI - ARE YOU MOVING OUT OF HARRISON?
Proud Citizen April 17, 2012 at 12:12 am
@Zach Oliva
8:45 am on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 It's illegal to send an officer out on the street before he or she finishes the academy. They made the new hires, but until they are trained there isn't much anyone can do to speed up that process. That is incorrect because a Person can be hiredas a Police Officer and put onto the street prior to going to the police academy as long as the Police Department teaches Article 35 ( use of Force) and some NYS Penal law. But the new hiree must complete the Academy within his 1st year as a Police Officer!
