HPD Senior Check Program Possibly Saves a Life

Harrison Police saved a woman they say was minutes from falling into a diabetic coma last week.

A Harrison senior citizen is in good health today thanks to the Harrison Police Department's Welfare Check Program and the heads up police work of Officer Thomas Milone.

While making a daily welfare check on a senior living on Walnut Lane in Harrison on April 6, Milone's quick actions probably saved the woman from slipping into a diabetic coma, police say.

Milone noticed the woman's door was slightly ajar and immediately called for backup. When he entered the home the officer heard sounds coming from the bedroom and found the woman there lightheaded and incoherent.

Police later determined the woman, who was diabetic, had taken too much insulin and was only minutes from falling into a diabetic coma. An ambulance was rushed to the scene and the woman is back in good health, police say.

The welfare check program in Harrison is used by and is available to any local senior interested in a visit. During the checks police are able to look for health problems, possible crimes and sometimes just provide the seniors with someone to interact with on a daily basis.
