House Fire Displaces Purchase Family [VIDEO]

A fire burned through a floor in room toward the back of the large two-story home.

A fire on Old Lyme Road in Purchase has displaced a family for at least the rest of the holiday season.

Firefighters responded to 37 Old Lyme Road at about 2:40 Thursday afternoon and arrived to a powerful fire in a powder room toward the back of the home. There were at least two people in their late teens home at the time, who were able to escape unharmed after they were alerted by the home's emergency alarm system, said Asst. West Harrison Fire Chief Michael Pellegrino.

The fire burned a three-by-three foot hole through the floor of the room. Firefighters at the scene said it is likely an electrical fire that originated between a basement ceiling and the floor of the room. The fire was contained to the 15-by-10 foot powder room, but smoke was visible coming out of second floor rafters when firefighters arrived.

Firefighters stretched a line into the back of the home and knocked down the fire within minutes, said Pellegrino.

Officials said they do not know at this time how many people live in the one-family home.

The , and Valhalla Fire Departments were on the scene.
