Holiday Police Reminder: If You See Something, Say Something

This Fourth of July, law enforcement agencies encourage citizens to remain vigilant.

"Operation Safeguard," an effort of Zone 3 of New York State Counter Terrorism team (CTZ-3), in operation since 2004, reminds Westchester citizens of the ongoing threat of terrorism. Individuals and businesses may unwittingly be exploited by individuals who want to harm our citizens and our country, according to a release from CTZ-3.

Recent events that occurred during the Boston Marathon are reminders of the need to remain vigilant. Foreign and domestic terrorism are part of today's world and a factor in daily life, according to the CTZ-3 release, though it's not always possible to understand the motivations of terrorists.

The Boston Marathon is proof that terrorism can reach many venues in America, and as a result, according to the release, this Fourth of July holiday weekend law enforcement agencies will conduct highly visible patrols and inspections of public places.

This “Holiday Tasking” will begin on Wednesday, July 3rd, and end on early morning of Tuesday, July 8th. The tasking will consist of law enforcement officers conducting periodic security checks of train stations, commuter parking lots, bus routes, shopping malls, and public parks, where holiday events may be held. Therefore, according to the release, the public may notice more police officers on patrol during the upcoming Fourth of July weekend.

The increased uniformed presence is not because there is a renewed safety threat, but rather, according to the release, is simply part of a counter-terrorism strategy of continued vigilance.

During holiday celebrations, CTZ-3 remind citizens to be mindful of behavior that does not match the usual pattern of activity found within our daily lives, and, “If you see something say something."

The Public is reminded if suspicious activity is observed:

  • Do not confront the individual(s).
Do not reveal your suspicions to the individual(s)
  • Do record as many details as possible
  • Do notify local police agencies by calling 911 or their direct number or call SAFE NYS Tipline at 1-866-SAFE-NYS or 1-866-723-3697
