Bronx Veterinarian Accused of Dumping Animals Near Hutch

Andrew Manesis, 66, faces four misdemeanor charges after Westchester County Police say he illegally disposed of animal remains along the Hutchinson River Parkway in Harrison.

Westchester County Police have arrested a Bronx veterinarian in connection with the along the side of the Hutchinson River Parkway in Harrison.

Andrew Manesis, 66, who lives on Oak Street in New Canaan, CT, was arrested Friday and charged with scheme to defraud in the second-degree, violation of environmental conservation law and two counts of petit larceny—all misdemeanors.

Transportation maintenance officials discovered 35 dead animals at the northbound entrance to the Hutchinson River Parkway from Westchester Avenue on April 5. They found 26 cats, eight dogs and a lizard in black garbage bags in dense woods near the highway.

Police believe Manesis, who works at the Throgs Neck Animal Hospital at 3800 East Tremont Avenue in the Bronx, was asked to properly dispose of the animals after they had died of natural causes, but instead drove to the location and dumped the animals on the side of the road.

“Dr. Manesis was entrusted by his clients to dispose of their pets’ remains in a proper and dignified manner,” Public Safety Commissioner George N. Longworth said. “Instead, it appears he simply pulled off to the side of a local highway and tossed the animal carcasses into the woods.”

Police used evidence from the scene to find the owners of two of the pets. Those pets provided a link to the Throggs Neck Animal Hospital and ultimately to Manesis, police say.

The arrest is the result of a joint investigation by the General Investigations Unit of the Westchester County Police and the Humane Law Enforcement Division of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Westchester.

County Police detectives are currently working to identify the remaining 33 animals found on the side of the parkway and find their owners. Anyone with information can contact detectives at 1-877-220-3560. The county police also accept tips by text and email at TIPS@WCCOPS.COM.

Manesis is due in Harrison Court on June 5.

lareina, Ignore these idiots! This is a horrible act commited by a horrible man.. Apparently you can't have a serious conversation unless it's about abortion or you get attacted.. I have reported most of them..They have attacked you horriblly and I have been cursed at. I told Patch they are not on here to discuss the debate at hand they just want ANOTHER PLACE TO TALK ABOUT ABORTION AND UNBORN RIGHTS.. THEY HAVE TAKEN THAT TO THE EXTREME.. SICKOS! They use every chance they get to talk about it. Their lives revolve around it.. You have been attacted terribly on here and it's so wrong.. It just shows their ignorance.. I reported everyone who was not discussing what this was about and the other moron Billy wit h the filthy mouth...
Tim Daniel May 30, 2012 at 08:56 PM
Imagine how he treats them when they are living....
Ross Revira May 30, 2012 at 09:05 PM
Donna, is snapping one's neck a violent act ? What the Vet did is despicable but it is not even a felony. Should the punishment be execution?
Nancy Leonard May 30, 2012 at 09:16 PM
For the crazy PETA crowd, the answer would be YES!
Heron May 30, 2012 at 10:03 PM
horrible, you aren't exactly stabbing me in the heart with your comment. Once someone (human or animal) is dead, I don't feel any sentimental attachment to their dead body. The memories of the person when they were ALIVE are what's important to me. And I do have a parent who has died.

He stole my GAY cat
lareina228 May 30, 2012 at 11:35 PM
Yes crazy PETA crowd!!! This conversation has gone way over board
Nancy Leonard May 30, 2012 at 11:41 PM
Especially with people like you wanting to snap his neck.
lareina228 May 30, 2012 at 11:54 PM
Yes omg harp on one thing!!!
Teleman May 30, 2012 at 11:56 PM
It's well known they care much more about animals than people- now you can see it in writing on this comment board, maniacs!
HeronStupidity May 31, 2012 at 08:20 AM
Would you have liked it if after paying for burial of your loved ones, your deceased parent for example, whom you loved and had fond memories of were tossed to the side of the road like garbage? Let me know when you lose another loved one. We'll make a little game out of it, just like this vet. You place them in my trust for their cremation and I'll toss him or her out on a highway and you can then drive around and try and find them.
lareina228 May 31, 2012 at 01:10 PM
HeronStupidity - finally someone with some brains make a comment. People have turned this conversation into an abortion debate - how did the conversation go there?
Heron May 31, 2012 at 02:03 PM
Do you eat meat? Do you feel that the bodies of all animals are as important as the bodies of your parents?
lareina228 May 31, 2012 at 02:50 PM
actually i do not eat meat. I'm sorry but noone is ever going to agree - so just stop. and if this isnt important to you then why do you keep commenting?

Everyone already has this man tried, convicted and sentenced. What about the presumption of innocence that we all are afforded under our constitution. Read between the lines of the statements by the police "they believe" and "it appears" apparently no one saw anything. If he is guilty, then he deserves to be convicted. If he is not, he does not deserve the hatred and vitriol I have read here thus far. This reminds me of the Salem witch hunts.
jotengs May 31, 2012 at 03:46 PM
Lareina228 stated "Don't judge before you know please." Do you see how easy it is to attack and be attacked. This just further illustrates my earlier point.
Walden Macnair May 31, 2012 at 04:04 PM
jotengs, The police use the phrases, it appears to be, we believe, allegedly and a host of others only because they legally can not say he did it until after he's convicted. I agree he hasn't been convicted but i gotta tell you, It ain't lookin good.
nightshaye May 31, 2012 at 04:17 PM
This is so sad, for the animals and for the situation. What happened to this person who put so much time and effort into becoming and practicing as a veterinarian? A person who wanted to work with animals, heal them and make them better? I'm sure he has helped his share. It makes me sad that it happened to both the animals and to him.
nightshaye May 31, 2012 at 04:37 PM
Stacey, I understand- this situation isn't acceptable. At the same time, I'm sure your friend has done a lot of good as well. Myself, I feel that should be considered also. A one-sided view is just that. One sided.

Donna Casey +Larenia 228 need to get a ROOM for the night.
Ross Revira May 31, 2012 at 07:31 PM
This whole thread shows how whacked out our society has become. Heron Stupidity equates the dumping of DEAD animals (which were never intended to be buried) with the burial of one's parents. At least the screen name fits the comment. Then you have lareina228 offering to break the neck of the Vet and then excuses her violent behavior by stating she is an animal lover. She then says she is not a PETA wacko. Maybe she does not read what she writes.
lareina228 May 31, 2012 at 07:43 PM
ROSS please - i am not associated with PETA . Who the hell are you to say anything about me? Do you know who I am? This guy should be treated in the same manner in which he treated the animals. Do you see me calling people Pro Life Wackos - I mean get real
Paula May 31, 2012 at 07:59 PM
The reaction of accusing people of not caring about unborn babies being murdered is Teresa's M.O. just because you care deeply about what this vet does does not mean you are pro-abortion. It's as if there was an article about abortion and Theresa was in her prime glory of commenting, and people started accusing her of not caring about the children murdered in Syria just because she's emotional about abortion...a nd then the whole blog line gets dominated by an off-topic subject. And it's stupid to continue these off-topic arguments. I think the only one who wins them is the digital news source, whichever one it's on at the time, because I believe they get their funding based on the number of hits on a blogline.
timmyAplusplus May 31, 2012 at 08:06 PM
What does eating meat, that the animals were dead, or abortion have to do with this issue? I am not a dog owner, never have been, nor sympathetic with or a member of Peta. If i had paid for the cremation of a pet or a loved one and then had occasion to drive past that pet or loved one, laying out on the side of a highway after being tossed there from a car, by the very person I entrusted with that cremation... Simply. These actions are INDEFENSIBLE. With regard to those who would like five minutes only with this guy. For most that will have to remain but a dream, for the line which awaits this guy is a very, very, long one.
lareina228 May 31, 2012 at 08:53 PM
Timmy - thanks for bringing the convo back to what its supposed to be. I was accused of being a Peta freak because of one comment. I just dont get it.
Ross Revira May 31, 2012 at 09:05 PM
How do you explain offering to break someone's neck for illegally dumping dead animals. You said it but fail to take responsibility for your words. You state that the Vet should be treated in the same manner he treated the animals but he did not kill the animals but you advocate killing him? Please explain?
Heron May 31, 2012 at 11:58 PM
I was asking HeronStupidity not you.
jotengs June 01, 2012 at 02:40 AM
If he did it...he is simply charged, not convicted...do you have any idea how easy it is to arrest someone with little or no proof? An allegation is all it takes. Look at how many people are being released from jail after spending 20+ years in jail as a result of DNA. All I am saying is that these posts assume guilt and the hysteria and media hype will never allow for a fair trial.
Edwin June 06, 2012 at 03:06 AM
I have been taking my two dogs Wynnie and Frodo to Dr. Manesis for about 4 years + and have never had a problem with the care he has provided for my dogs ( family members). I hope that this gets cleared up and that if these allegations are true that justice is served if not that his name is cleared. Innocent until proven guilty....... That's what I have been taught, people like to jump to conclusions without waiting for all the facts.
Chris June 06, 2012 at 12:42 PM
Edwin, you are the minority in this case. There have been a lot of people very unhappy with the care their pets have received from Dr. Manesis and his staff. If I were you, I would seek out another veterinarian because his name is not good and he will probably be moving out of the Bronx after this and I will be surprised if he is still allowed to practice in NY.
