73 Year Old Charged With Stealing Shopping Carts From A&P

Police say the man loaded 14 shopping carts into a box truck and was reported by an anonymous caller.

A 73-year-old New Rochelle man earned two misdemeanor theft charges at Harrison A&P after he was caught trying to steal shopping carts, police say.

A witness called police at about 10:15 a.m. Friday and reported that someone was stealing the carts. When police arrived they spotted Arduino Lisi driving a white box truck out of the A&P parking lot onto Oakland Avenue. Police say the back of the truck was open when they arrived, revealing the shopping carts that were unsecured in the back of the vehicle.

Lisi told police supermarkets pay him $5 per cart for retrieving them from A&P and Shop Rite and returning them to their stores. But a visit with the A&P manager put a hole in that story, as he told police Arduino is not employed by the store.

Inside the box truck police found 14 shopping carts, two of which belonged to A&P. Lisi told police he gathered the other carts at various locations in the Bronx.

Police charged Lisi, of 180 Union Ave., with possession of stolen property, petit larceny and several driving infractions. He was later released without bail and is due in court on Nov. 29.
