Coleman Named ECAC West Conference Rookie of the Week

After leading the Manhattanville men's hockey team in points last week, freshman forward Matt Coleman was named the ECAC West Conference Rookie of the Week honor on Monday.

CENTERVILLE, Mass. – After leading the Manhattanville men's hockey team in points last week, freshman forward Matt Coleman (Brentwood, N.Y./Springfield Pics (EJHL)) was rewarded with his first ECAC West Conference Rookie of the Week honor, the conference office announced on Monday night.

Coleman picks up the first conference honor of his career after a strong week for the Valiants as a facilitator, recording four assists in two games as Manhattanville defeated Connecticut College, 5-3, and fell to Trinity (Conn.), 3-1.

On Tuesday against the Camels, the freshman notched a +2 rating and a season-high three points with a trio of assists, all coming on goals by linemates Scott Hudson (St. Albert, Alta./Sherwood Park Crusaders (AJHL)) and Luc Van Natter (Fort Erie, Ont./Aurora Tigers (OPJHL)). He then came back on Friday to record an assist on the Valiants' lone goal of the game, which came midway through the first period on the power play.

On the season, Coleman is tied for third on the team with 13 points, having scored five times and assisted on eight tallies over the first 12 games of the year. He enters the holiday break tied for sixth in Division III in points by a rookie.

Coleman is the third Valiant to earn conference weekly honors this year, joining sophomore Mark Rivera (Belmar, N.J./Springfield Pics (EJHL)), who was named the ECAC West Player of the Week on November 27, and sophomore Brian Fleming (Saint John, N.B./Northern Cyclones (AJHL)), who has twice been named the ECAC West Goaltender of the Week.

The Valiants will take a few weeks off for finals and the holiday break before returning to action at the Middlebury Holiday Classic on December 30-31, beginning with a 1 p.m. meeting with Wentworth.
