New Heritage Trail Signs Provide Links to History

West Harrison's system of trails behind Silver Lake now provide hikers with a better knowledge of the historic area.

A walk along West Harrison's Heritage Trail offers hikers the chance to visit some of the most historically significant landmarks the region has to offer.

The only problem is until now there was nothing there to indicate it.

For that reason, the West Harrison Neighborhood Association (WHNA) has spent the last five years working on a project to mark the trails with new signs. Donations from the WHNA have replaced trail markers with signs that include trail names and list the historical significance of several stops along the way.

"We really take pride in West Harrison and the heritage we have here," said WHNA President Lori Wilson. "The desire was to make that known a little bit more among the residents."

Along the trail hikers can find ties to the Revolutionary War and Underground Railroad. A battleground from the American Revolution can be found along the way, along with a 300-year-old cemetery. The trail also connects West Harrison to White Plains and North White Plains on the western edge and provides scenic views of the lake and surrounding area.

The entrance to the trails is located near Passidomo Park in West Harrison.

Wilson said the signs on the Harrison side of the trail will help people learn more about the history, while also enjoying the outdoor space that the space has to offer.

"Now people can walk the Heritage Trail and know what they are walking on and what the significance is," she said.

All of the signs were donated by the WHNA, which is a non-profit group that supports the interests of residents in West Harrison.

Most of the signs were posted about a week ago and the final additions are expected to be complete by the end of the week.
