Manhattanville Alumna Introduces New Book

Manhattanville College alumna Monique Vagueiro ’13 recently wrote a children’s book Allergic to Bullying,” and she will be coming to campus to read it on Monday, April 28.

Vagueiro received her bachelor’s degree from Manhattanville in Childhood Education and English, and is currently working on her Master of Professional Studies in Literacy.  She is an elementary school teacher in her hometown of New Rochelle, New York. Her goal as an author is to promote the message that together people can help kids who are being victimized and who feel as if they do not have a voice.

“I have celiac disease and thus have many food allergies. As I was student teaching I saw students who were being made fun of and bullied because of the foods they could not eat,” said Vagueiro.

“Allergic to Bullying” tells the story of several second grade students who are being bullied during lunch and in their classroom because of their food allergies. It goes on to show how a teacher brings her students together to demonstrate that we should all stand together and be “allergic to bullying.” The teacher helps the students who are being bullied and their classmates to come up with an anti-bullying song.  Her book is available at Barnes & Noble stores, as well as on-line at Barnesandnoble.com, Amazon.com and Mascotbooks.com.

“I was inspired to write this book because everyday students are being bullied for various reasons, and as educators we need to teach our students how to value one another and to respect one another’s needs.  We need to stand up to bullying together,” Vagueiro said.
