LMK Carnival Supports the Rebuilding of NYSD’s Playground

The students, faculty, and staff at Louis M. Klein Middle School presented a check for over $6,800 to teachers and students from the New York School for the Deaf during the eighth grade concert at LMK.  The LMK students and faculty held their annual Carnival to raise money for local causes and became inspired by a local story they had heard on the radio.

The New York School for the Deaf lost their playground more than a year ago when it sustained permanent, structural damage from Hurricane Sandy.  The flooring of the School’s playground needed to be rubberized, a more expensive surface, since a wood-chip base would be difficult for many of their students who use wheelchairs and walkers.  It was imperative that this outdoor space be available to all of its students.

The LMK students and faculty met and visited with the students and teachers at the New York School for the Deaf before the Carnival.  They quickly formed bonds and found ways to communicate with one another.  The LMK students invited their new friends to the LMK 8th Grade concert where the NYSD students were able to enjoy the event through the signing of the 1960’s inspired songs through a sign language interpreter.

“Thank you for your support of NYSD and our playground fund,” said New York School for the Deaf Principal Barbara Robinson.  “We are so excited to soon be able to provide our students with the accessible playground they need and deserve.  There are not enough words to thank you all for such a beautiful and generous gesture.”
